Today we're taking a quick look at the contents of the LEGO Pokémon 40868 Up-Scaled Red Minifigure set , a 930-piece box currently available for pre-order on the official online store for €79,99 and which will be available from October 1, 2026. This product is exclusive to the Shop; it is not currently available for pre-order anywhere other than at LEGO.

At the risk of disappointing some fans, for its first large-scale Pokémon-licensed figure, LEGO has chosen to represent Red, the playable Kanto trainer seen in the Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow video games on Game Boy, as well as in the Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen games. on Game Boy Advance. Sasha, for her part, should eventually appear in a future game of the same ilk.

I won't go over the whole premise of the format used here, which LEGO uses extensively across many ranges with a common "trunk" for the limbs and torso. Here, it's the character's cap that stands out, and in my opinion, not for the better. The accessory seems frankly oversized and simply placed on the head of the 27.5 cm tall figure instead of covering part of it. The head ends up looking almost too high in relation to the figure's body, and I don't recognize the character's usual look.

LEGO doesn't put much effort into the young trainer's feet, simply providing us with uninspired blue legs instead of attempting to recreate the colorful sneakers he wears, which one would expect on a model of this type. The backpack is a bit too flat to convince me, and the Poké Ball is blocky. All these shortcomings shouldn't dampen the enthusiasm of younger fans, who will be happy to display a large-scale trainer on their shelves, but I think we've reached the limits of the imposed format.

The front of the torso with its badge remains, and it's rather well done despite the studs around the collar and the attempt to create a sleeveless vest with flesh-colored forearms. It's a meager effort for a licensed product that should have received more attention.

In terms of the face, Red has the same syndrome as Harry and Hermione in the LEGO Harry Potter set 76393 Harry Potter & Hermione Granger : as soon as a flesh-colored face character does not wear a beard or helmet, we inevitably realize that he does not have a chin.

This is a failure on this point. LEGO has certainly had ample time to work on this since the release of the set with the young wizards in 2021, and a solution involving a dedicated meta-piece could have salvaged the situation. After all, appearance is paramount in this larger version of the minifigure, and what works visually at the minifigure scale doesn't really work at this scale, in my opinion.

Regarding the Poké Ball, LEGO should have tried something with dedicated pieces to convincingly represent a sphere in this box and in the 30729 Premier Ball paperbag , knowing that these will likely not be the only interpretations of the Poké Ball in this format. The object is the symbol of this universe, and it surprises me that LEGO, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company didn't consider a visually acceptable and consistent solution.

As usual, the figure's arms and legs can move (a little), the Poké Ball can be switched hands, and the head can be turned so the trainer can stare at you. This is more than enough to allow for various poses on your shelves.

Once again, LEGO is omitting the Tiles which would have allowed them to improve the finish of the feet of the figure, as is the case on the one in set 40820 Up-Scaled Santa Minifigure which has been on the market since 2025.

No stickers in this box, nothing hidden under or inside the cap, nothing in the rather flat backpack, and all you find is the traditional pink brick in the center of the Poké Ball. No minifigure in this box either; the character to build here will, however, be included as a minifigure in the LEGO Pokémon set 72154 Iconic Trainer Moments: Poké Ball (2339 pieces - €249,99). Clever lynx.

In short, this figure probably won't revolutionize the genre, and it makes the best of the imposed format, with a few minor flaws that shouldn't bother many people in the end, certainly not the target audience for this product. At €80, it's probably a nice gift for a young fan who would rather save their pocket money for Pokémon cards.

The object which is intended to work in association with the SMART Brick is therefore useless as it stands since the information it contains and which it can deliver via the reading of the NFC chip embedded in the plastic piece can only be read by the smart brick available only in a few sets which are a bit expensive for what they have to offer.
