Today we're taking a quick look at the contents of the LEGO Super Mario set. 72050 LEGO Mario Kart – Luigi & Mach 8A 2234-piece set is available for pre-order starting today on the official online store for €179,99 and will be released on April 1, 2026. This new kart, complete with its driver, will join the one from the LEGO Super Mario set. 72037 Mario & Standard Kart (€169,99) on the shelves of fans.
There's no need to prolong the suspense: it's quite a success, resulting in a lovely display piece measuring 41 cm long, 23 cm wide, and 25 cm high. Both the kart and the figure are very well-crafted, and the whole thing is remarkably realistic.
The product offers a rather entertaining and varied building experience, and the chassis makes ample use of elements from the LEGO Technic ecosystem right from the start. These elements serve to stiffen the vehicle and integrate the functional steering, as well as the mechanism linked to the left rear wheel that rotates the flames coming out of the exhaust pipe. The steering angle isn't wide enough for tight turns, but the wheels quickly reach the vehicle's body anyway.
The Proto 8's bodywork is generally faithful to the reference kart, with well-executed angles, although a few gaps remain here and there. In my opinion, the finish is polished and worthy of a product intended for adult collectors, which isn't always the case with sets labeled 18+.
The go-kart is mounted on a stand that allows for a dynamic staging effect by adjusting the angle of the platform holding the vehicle. The stand remains discreet and doesn't detract from the scene. The tires are hollow and get very dirty, and the axles onto which the rims are attached lack a bit of rigidity.
It looks nice in a stationary position when the kart is on the ground, with the wheels tucked in, but it will be difficult to imagine actually rolling the thing. Only the left rear axle, which houses the flame rotation mechanism, is flawlessly rigid. No further mention Mario Motors on the sidewall of the tires and it's a bit of a shame and it's not possible to orient the tires horizontally in hoverboard mode like in Mario Kart 8.
Once again, don't rely too much on the heavily retouched official images: the Proto 8 isn't light blue or pastel blue, it's standard LEGO blue. Note that the cockpit canopy comes in its own bag, so the accessory arrives in good condition and without scratches when you unpack the 22 bags that you'll need to assemble using the very thick 370-page instruction booklet.
Regarding the Luigi figure, his face is slightly less round than Mario's, which seems consistent with the character's physical appearance. Both characters have relatively flat faces around the eyes, with Mario benefiting from a prominent nose and a slightly less angular jaw. Luigi, on the other hand, doesn't really have a chin when viewed in profile.
Just to be clear: there are no stickers in this box, and all the patterned elements are printed. For those wondering, the Luigi figure is separate from the kart, but it's assembled in its final pose without any leg joints.
It will therefore be impossible to display the figure standing next to its vehicle. However, the head can be positioned according to the angle of the product's display, and the arms can be slightly raised to symbolize victory, for example.
In terms of technical flaws, the slightly pale white of the pad-printed design on the front of the figure's cap stands out; the result is bland and lacks impact, especially on a purely display piece. The overall finish of the figure is otherwise very good when viewed from the front or three-quarters, though this is somewhat less true in profile, where blue pins are visible at the shoulders.
For the rest, in my opinion, this is a very nice display piece which, combined with Mario and his Kart, will make a lovely decoration in a child's bedroom or on the shelves of an adult fan. This set is currently exclusive to the official online store, but this exclusivity period is temporary, and this set will be available elsewhere than at LEGO from June 1st, 2026. For less than the €180 LEGO is asking.
Note: The product shown here, provided by LEGO, is as usual involved. Deadline fixed at March 28, 2026 at 23:59 p.m. Simply post a comment below the article to participate.

It's officially confirmed by LEGO and Nintendo via social media: the LEGO Super Mario range will finally get minifigures in 2027. The online announcement confirms at least Mario in minifigure form, but I think we can imagine that Luigi, Yoshi, and even Toad and Peach will also get their own figures. We can also imagine that Bowser will be in "BigFig" format for the occasion.
This announcement opens up exciting possibilities for fans who until now had to make do with the interactive Mario, Luigi, and Peach figurines included in the... Starter sets from the LEGO Super Mario range and make do with the piece-based constructions offered for the other characters.
