LEGO fans who want to protect their precious sets are willing to spend exorbitant amounts to buy display cases that will protect them from the ravages of time, even paying more for the case than for the product itself.

Sellers are understandably having a field day with a barrage of technical superlatives, promising "Premium" plexiglass with exceptional transparency and eternal durability, all combined with NASA-worthy cutting techniques to justify sometimes mind-boggling prices.

Like many of you, I've been looking for cheaper display cases, even willing to compromise on certain finishing or design details so as not to feel like I'm putting already expensive plastic into even more expensive plastic.

Upon arrival, as is often the case, a little research quickly reveals that there are only a handful of manufacturers located in China who supply resellers, some of whom then modify these products in one way or another to proudly claim they were made in France. And that's without even considering the rampant dropshipping.

I selected the display case for the LEGO ICONS 11373 The Lord of the Rings: Sauron set (€74,99), opting for a model with a printed insert on the back, which showcases the model in a more sophisticated setting than the living room wall or wallpaper.

This model, currently selling for €42,95 without the printed insert and €51,93 with the patterned back panel, is obviously identical to many other versions seen elsewhere but sold for up to twice the price. With 3mm thick panels, clean cuts, and a high-quality finish, and transparent screws included in the box, everything is there, properly packaged. You'll need to remove the protective film from the various panels to benefit from the promised transparency, and assembly only takes a few minutes. Some manufacturers offer 4 or 5mm thick panels, but I'm not sure that's necessary since the display case isn't subjected to any particular stress.

The transparent screws provided here are a bit more discreet than the metal brackets found on some other models. However, they're less discreet than when the panels are glued together by the manufacturer on very high-end, expensive display cases. You do lose the modularity of the design and the possibility of disassembling the display case for storage. As it stands, I find the compromise acceptable, with fixing points that don't detract from the appearance of the display case and are quickly forgotten.

It's also worth noting that shipping a glued display case can be risky. A properly packaged display case that requires assembly will generally arrive at your door in perfect condition.

The included transparent "cubes" are generic; they are used to connect two or three panels together using the acrylic screws provided in the box. Avoid overtightening the screws to prevent damage; replacements are included. The panels are blank, without any cosmetic engraving that would permanently associate the display case with the product and limit its future use for another set of the same size.

Upon arrival, I find the result quite acceptable for a display case sold at a relatively reasonable price. This product meets current standards, and for good reason: it's also sold by a whole host of "craftsmen" who supposedly work in their garages or basements and promise to provide their clients with an exceptional display case in about ten days of "manufacturing"—which is the shipping time from China.

The patterned panels offered by manufacturers are not always in the best taste, but the options are numerous and varied, and you are sure to find one that suits you.

I almost forgot, the "real" manufacturers of these products are also the ones who wholesale the wall panels for hanging your F1 cars or displaying your Speed ​​Champions. Don't believe everything you hear on TikTok, where small-time "designers" resell these panels for up to three or four times the original price, making you believe they make them in their backyard shed.
