Manufacturer Mattel announces the upcoming launch of a new brand soberly titled Mattel Brick Shop with what seems to be an overflowing ambition and the desire to come and get LEGO, without naming it, on its playing field. Today there are few competitors to come and nibble away at LEGO's market share and the few brands that play the game by respecting the rules regarding patents and intellectual property are struggling a little to exist even if some of them are currently flooding social networks with great reinforcements of products offered to influencers of all sizes.

Mattel is not a second-rate player in the toy sector, and more particularly in the construction toy sector, via its subsidiary MEGA Bloks which currently operates several high-end licenses such as Masters of The Universe, Pokemon, Skyrim, Fallout, Halo, Hot Wheels and even Barbie, with a whole section of its catalog directly targeting an adult clientele.

With this know-how, the brand intends to enter the construction toy market with a new visual identity and by promising innovation, creativity and quality bricks, all at affordable prices. This list of features almost seems to be designed as a response to the criticisms that we sometimes hear about LEGO and its ability to rest perhaps a little too much on its laurels as world number one:

Building on Mattel’s heritage and expertise, Mattel Brick Shop™ redefines the standards of building play by offering innovative features, materials and techniques, inspiring fans to push the boundaries of their creativity. Discover a unique experience with quality bricks, precise assembly and clear, easy-to-follow manuals.

Our goal is to offer products that meet the expectations of construction fans with innovative designs, authentic details and affordable prices. We look forward to unveiling the first range of our brand in a few months.

Not much is known about the products promised by Mattel at the moment, except that they will be available from May 2025 and that the manufacturer already has a plan for several years. We will have to wait to learn more about this manufacturer's proposal to know if it is a real desire to innovate or if this new brand will only have the ambition to come and nibble away at LEGO's market share on its own ground by, for example, going after adult customers thanks to high-end licensed products.

In any case, competition is beneficial for consumers as long as it is not anecdotal as is the case today with LEGO, it has an impact on prices, on the quality of products and on the risk-taking necessary to stay at the forefront. The future will tell us if Mattel will be able to embody this major competitor to LEGO that the market undoubtedly needs.
