71051 lego collectible minifigures series 28 animal costumes review 1

Today we're taking a quick look at the 12 characters in the LEGO collection. 71051 Collectible Minifigures Series 28Each of these figurines will be available individually from January 1st, 2026 at LEGO for a suggested retail price of €3.99.

For your information, Minifigure Maddness is currently offering pre-orders on a set of two boxes of 36 packagesThe set of two boxes (72 figures in total) is offered at €228,98 including shipping when using the code S28 Preorder or,  3.18 € the minifig delivered to your home via UPS Express. Shipment expected around the second week of January 2026.

I'm not going to give you a detailed "analysis" of each minifigure; there's nothing to analyze here, and this series of costumed characters will easily find its audience regardless. We know that costumes of this type have been very popular with LEGO since 2011, and these 12 new versions will enrich the collections of those who already have numerous animal-themed minifigures collected from the various series released so far and neatly arranged in their Ribba frames.

What we see here is that LEGO doesn't always put the same effort into the costumes. Some figures benefit from highly detailed printing, extending to the back, arms, and legs, while others have to make do with the bare minimum. It's almost as if LEGO has carefully balanced its efforts to maintain the profitability of this series of 12 figures.

As is often the case, don't rely too heavily on the official images, which are overly optimistic about the quality of the lightest prints on dark elements. The results are still quite bland, and characters whose appearance relies almost entirely on these prints, like the dolphin, the koala, or the rabbit, don't fare particularly well here.

Don't get too excited about the accessories that come with some of these figures and are presented by LEGO as being held by the characters in question: the peacock, the parrot, the goldfish and the dolphin obviously cannot hold the objects that come with them.

All the characters feature heads with dual facial expressions. This is often very well done, with expressions perfectly suited to the costume the figure is wearing: the Dalmatian pants, the koala sleeps, the parrot screeches, the frog croaks, the lion roars, and so on. It's a simple graphic detail, but a nice touch.

As for the included accessories, they are generally very satisfactory, with items that are also well-suited to the theme. There are obviously some obvious shortcuts like the banana for the monkey or the ball of yarn for the cat, but there are also some nice touches like the boomerang for the koala, the frisbee for the dog, or the box of snacks for the parrot.

For those wondering, the peacock's plumage isn't a new piece; it's the same element used for the turkey costume released in 2023 as part of the 23rd series of collectible characters. This new version of the rabbit is a welcome replacement for the one with the slightly more neutral mask that we've all had at least once in our collections since 2012, when the white costume first appeared in the 7th series of minifigures, and again in 2018 with the promotional Easter set. 5005249 Easter bunny or even 2020 with the set 853990 Easter bunny.

It's a shame about the parrot's tail, which is made of soft fabric; a proper piece would have been much better than the two scraps of cloth. This is the only figure in the series to use these accessories, which aren't made of plastic.

It's also worth noting that LEGO is a bit stingy with extra pieces in the sets this time. Not all the characters have additional elements, but to be fair, they don't all come with small parts that are often included twice. The pearl in the shell that comes with the dolphin, and the lids for the goldfish food container and the bubble liquid container for the frog, are included twice.

Was it absolutely necessary to group all these costumes into a single series instead of releasing them gradually across new collections of 12 characters? Those who are fans of the subject matter here won't object, but I find it a bit of a shame to cram such good ideas into one set instead of creating a sense of surprise regularly. However, since there's nothing to criticize here, acquiring a complete series is a must, provided you can find it at the best price. It's fun, colorful, original, and generally well-executed from a technical standpoint.

It's been understood for a long time that €4 each is far too expensive for a single figurine, however well-made it may be. The concept of impulsively buying a surprise at the checkout is long gone; nobody does that anymore. This is evidenced by the app wars that allow users to scan boxes to determine their contents, leading to all the well-known problems, such as figurines being pre-sorted by store employees before being put on the shelves to favor their friends or acquaintances, leaving the less desirable ones in the bins. The goldfish and the koala are likely to quickly become the hardest to find.

LEGO unveils the 28th series of 12 collectible characters, available from January 1st, 2026, at a retail price of €3,99 per minifigure: this is the LEGO reference. 71051 Collectible Minifigures Series 28 with its 12 characters in animal costumes. It's cute, we know that animal costumes are very popular with fans, but in my opinion, not worth paying €4 for each figure.

You will therefore need to collect the 12 figurines listed below along with their accessories, or directly purchase a box of 36 characters which should allow you to obtain 3 complete series:

  • Lion
  • Monkey
  • Fluffy Cat
  • Dalmatian
  • Koala
  • Cute Bunny
  • Parrot
  • Peacock
  • Frog
  • Crocodile
  • Dolphin
  • Goldfish

Today we quickly take a look at the 12 characters that make up the series of collectible minifigs that will be available from September 1, 2025 under the reference 71050 Across the Spider-Verse Collectible MinifiguresAs you probably already know, these 12 characters are all inspired by their respective appearances in the animated film. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse released in 2023. These are secondary characters who will undoubtedly find their audience among the most dedicated fans but who will leave cold all those who only watch the Marvel universe from afar outside of its most famous superheroes.

LEGO would have had difficulty fitting these different characters into sets based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe current or on the films of the different sagas which put Spider-Man in the spotlight, it would have been necessary to place these different characters in products directly inspired by the comics or in sets linked to the animated film of 2023. Grouping them in a series of minifigs to collect is therefore in my opinion the only possibility, it is a shame that these figurines are sold for €3.99 each.

It must be said that LEGO is putting all its know-how into this series of 12 characters and the manufacturer is not stingy with various new accessories, pad printing overflowing onto all surfaces and elements to serve the figurines delivered in the usual cardboard boxes.

A note on this subject: since the parts are thrown into cardboard packaging that is far from being airtight and without an intermediate plastic bag, they are unpacked rather dusty. Only soft plastic or fabric elements benefit from dedicated packaging.

The most discerning fans know that many other characters seen on screen, sometimes very briefly, are missing here, but LEGO has made its choice from the existing variants and we'll have to make do with that selection. No Spider-Cop, Bag-Man, or even Metro Spider-Man and Superior Spider-Man.

On another note, expect some of the characters in this series to quickly become in high demand and disappear from your toy store shelves. The version of Miles Morales available here, Spider-Man 2099 or even Spider-Gwen (Gwen Stacy) and Werewolf Spider-Man (Peter Parker) should, in my opinion, quickly find their audience.

With almost unusual generosity, LEGO provides us with alternative faces for characters who usually wear a mask with dedicated hair and often two facial expressions. This ultimately only creates an additional problem for anyone planning to display these figures in a Ribba frame; a duplicate purchase of the characters concerned is almost essential, given the possibility of displaying both variants.

I won't describe in detail what you can see with your own eyes in the photos I'm offering you, just know that most of the pad printing is correct except for the usual light areas printed on darker surfaces. There are also some print alignment issues, such as on the side of Spider-Gwen's feet or on Spider-Man India's thighs.

These photos of the "real" figurines should above all allow you to get a very precise idea of what LEGO offers for €3.99 each, with a rendering that is often a little less optimistic in terms of finish compared to the extensively retouched official visuals put online by the manufacturer on its official store.

Miles Morales, for example, is duller in real life than the 3D renderings sold by LEGO, as is Sun-Spider's gaze. The alignment of the patterns on the front of the feet is sometimes a bit haphazard, like Peter Parker's with his baby carrier. The design of Cyborg Spider-Woman's legs has changed since the publication of the reference visual, with a very simplified pattern on the right thigh. Overall, the pad printing lines are coarser in real life than on the 3D renderings.

In the order below:

  • Spider-Man (Miles Morales)
  • Spider-Punk (Hobie Brown)
  • Spider-Man 2099 (Miguel O'Hara)
  • Cyborg Spider-Woman (Petra Parker)
  • Spider-Man India (Pavitr Prabhakar)
  • Web-Slinger (Patrick O'Hara)
  • Spider-Man & May Parker (Peter B. Parker & Mayday)
  • Prowler (Miles G. Morales)
  • Spider Gwen (Gwen Stacy)
  • Sun-Spider (Charlotte Webber)
  • Werewolf Spider-Man (Peter Parker)
  • Spider-Byte (Margo Kess)

Despite the few errors and other technical approximations noted, this series of 12 characters really breathes fresh air into a universe which at LEGO often makes do with the usual leading characters and their respective emblematic enemies.

Exploiting some of the multiple Spider-Man variations featured in the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse released in 2023 is therefore in my opinion a really good idea even if it lacks some of the variants just as emblematic as those proposed here and the selection would therefore have largely deserved to be expanded.

I doubt, however, that LEGO will continue in the same vein with a possible second series of 12 variants, but I already salute the effort to offer us attractive figurines with a successful design which allow us to expand our collections often composed of too many variants of the usual Spider-Man.

€4 per figurine is still a bit expensive despite the presence of numerous accessories or new elements here, but we all know that it is possible to reduce the unit cost by opting for boxes of 36 characters, for example at Minifigure Maddness, which is currently offering a pre-order on a set of two boxes of 36 packages at an attractive price.
