LEGO Architecture Notre-Dame de Paris - Architectural Exhibition Building Model - Set for Adults - Cathedral - for History Lovers
Today we take a quick look at the contents of the LEGO FORTNITE set 77078 Mecha Team Leader, a large box of 2503 pieces available since August 1st at the public price of €229,99 on the official online store and as often for less elsewhere than at LEGO.
Was the subject matter really worth the extravagance of coins and price positioning? Time will tell, and it remains to be seen whether the most nostalgic and dedicated Fortnite fans really need this large model tribute to the finale of the video game's ninth season on their shelves.
The proposition here is a bit strange, on paper it is about assembling in a little over 4 hours a large toy for adults of more than 45 cm high which at first glance seems correctly articulated and which promises to be able to take all the poses imaginable. LEGO tells us in the official description of the product of "all the poses he can adopt thanks to his articulated hips, arms, feet and head".
We actually integrate some "Joint Gears XL"large format, some elements of which have already been seen in the set 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex and which in principle allow precise positioning of the various modules connected to it. Here, it's complicated. You have to constantly deal with the weight of the model, 1.80 kg on the scale, and you quickly understand that all the fantasies will not be on the menu.
We're constantly struggling to find the object's balance point, and it's best to put the sword in one hand before trying to pose it; the weight of the sword inevitably changes the situation. The knee curse that regularly afflicts LEGO products has struck again, as this mech's legs are fixed, making it impossible to present it, for example, with one knee on the ground.
However, I am convinced that there is someone at LEGO capable of imagining a joint locking mechanism that could be used to allow integration in this precise location. Until something better is found, we must therefore be content with spacing out the legs or putting one slightly back to obtain an aesthetically pleasing layout for the whole thing.
On the arm side, the possibilities are more numerous with articulated shoulders, elbows and wrists but they also remain very limited, either because of the arrival at the end of the limbs or for questions of balance of the model. The sword can be fixed on both hands via two axes protruding from the handle, it's always something taken.
In any case, you will have to deal with the overall fragility of the whole thing; it is not uncommon for something to come loose during the quest for the ideal presentation pose. This is very annoying and also a bit paradoxical when you see the density and solidity of the internal structure of the mech, made up of tangles of Technic beams and axes.
If you are not familiar with the character presented here, do not imagine that this mech, which is an amalgam of different characters from the FORTNITE universe such as Tomatohead, Beef Boss, Rex, Drift or Cuddle Team Leader, can be deconstructed to enjoy the sub-assemblies separately. This is logically not possible and the only functionality provided is that which allows the minifig provided to be installed in the mech's torso. This figurine with its very successful pad printing can also be displayed on the small black support provided for this purpose and on which there is also a pad printed plate which reinforces the side "collector" of the object.
The quest for the ultimate LEGO mech will therefore not end with this proposal, which certainly has the merit of being very faithful to the reference subject. Too rigid, too heavy, too fragile and difficult to stage without breaking everything, this pretty model will undoubtedly find its audience among FORTNITE fans who would like to treat themselves to a "collector's" product based on bricks, but it is not the technical solution that would allow us to imagine obtaining, for example, a Jaeger or a very opulent Goldorak one day.
The fact remains that the subject covered here has been taken seriously by the designer and that with a little patience and attention to detail it will therefore be possible to add a nice decoration on the theme of the FORTNITE video game near a gaming setup.
Please note that this product allows you to obtain two digital bonuses to use in the video game: the Mecha Team Leader Pack and Mecha Team Shadow Pack via the QR code on the cover of the instruction booklet.
This well-made but precariously balanced spin-off is already available elsewhere than at LEGO for much less than its retail price, for example at Amazon, so there's no valid reason to spend €230 on this box at the official online store unless you absolutely want to get a copy of the LEGO FORTNITE set 40760 Adventure Peely & Cuddle Team Leader currently offered until August 11th for purchases of €130 or more.
Note: The product shown here, provided by LEGO, is as usual involved. Deadline fixed at August 15, 2025 at 23:59 pm. Just post a comment under the article to participate.
