Review : LEGO ICONS 10353 Williams Racing FW14B & Nigel Mansell

Today we take a quick tour of the content of the LEGO ICONS set 10353 Williams Racing FW14B & Nigel Mansell, a box of 799 pieces that will be available from March 1, 2025 at the public price of €79,99. This new reference in the ICONS range joins the one that featured another driver with his single-seater, the set 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna (79.99 €).

Here, it is the 1992 world champion Nigel Mansell who is at the controls of his Williams FW14B single-seater and the most observant will have noticed that the vehicle is equipped with different sized tires at the front and at the rear.

The signing of the partnership between LEGO and the Formula 1 license is undoubtedly not for nothing concerning this major aesthetic evolution. The vehicle of the set 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna was content with identical and neutral tires on both axles, the fans did not really appreciate this shortcut.

For the rest, we can once again be surprised by the relatively reduced inventory of the product knowing that a certain number of elements pass into the podium which allows the minifig of Nigel Mansell to be displayed as well as into the display stand intended to display the single-seater in an advantageous configuration.

The vehicle is however quickly assembled and there is only the very large sheet of stickers to slow down the construction. To try to see the glass half full, we note that the stickers are printed on a background matching the color of the surface on which they are placed.

Nevertheless, I find it a shame that a product benefiting from a licensing agreement between its manufacturer and the franchise that holds the rights to the subject matter would have merited an additional technical effort, knowing that the single-seater in the set 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna used only a small handful of stickers.

We find the suspension triangles already seen on Ayrton Senna's single-seater and the tires are integral with the rims and are this time pad-printed on the side. The suspension effect here only relies on the very limited flexibility of the triangles used and the Renault V10 engine is accessible by removing the bodywork element placed just behind the driver's head. The recipe is therefore the same as for Senna's single-seater and the two vehicles are on the same scale, with here 31 cm long by 15 cm wide against 32 cm long by 17 cm wide for the McLaren MP4/4.

Here too, we will have to put up with the slightly flat nose of the single-seater, but I find the whole thing really very successful with a very acceptable finish and the limited presence of elements from the Technic ecosystem that are simply there to serve the model. The minifig provided fulfills its role even if Nigel Mansell's helmet is far from being consistent with the real version of the accessory.

The single-seater is obviously not on the scale of the minifig delivered in the box but the latter can still be installed at the controls to have a little fun and the single-seater display stand is flanked by a large gray sticker listing some technical data, it's in good taste and it gives the model some character.

In my opinion, this product definitely deserves your attention if you are a Formula 1 fan, even if it is a car from another era. It offers a good compromise between the scale chosen and the level of detail offered, even if I know that some will only see a supercharged Speed ​​Champions reference which does not necessarily merit spending €80 on it.

We are not going to complain about having the right to accessible products from time to time in the LEGO ICONS range, the adult target must also be able to treat themselves for a reasonable budget. Those who find that all this is still a little too expensive can quickly save a few euros elsewhere than at LEGO by showing patience.
