Today we are quickly interested in the content of the LEGO ICONS set 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Ship, a box of 2862 pieces which will be available as an Insiders preview on the official online store from September 12, 2025 at the public price of €349,99.
For those who are wondering and who have arrived a little late in the world of LEGO, this is not the first interpretation of the ship and LEGO marketed in 2011/2012 a playset of the thing under the reference 4184 The Black Pearl (804 pieces - €99,99). It was then a children's toy and this new version with a more extensive inventory is presented this time as a pure exhibition model of 64 cm long by 64 cm high without completely neglecting the integrated functionalities or the various and varied fittings.
Let's get the main problem with this box out of the way right away: the construction is black. Even crazier, by the way, is that the black ship is sold in a box with a...black background. And that's a problem in itself, because LEGO still can't deliver elements in perfect condition right out of the box. I'm not talking about the usual injection points visible on certain pieces or the different shades of marbling that we often see on pieces with smooth surfaces and dark colors, I'm talking about the scratches on many pieces. These scratches are probably due to the elements rubbing against each other in their respective bags, which are much too large for what they contain.
More anecdotal but just as disturbing for the most demanding, the alternation of shiny and matte parts depending on their format which gives on arrival a model which lacks a little visual homogeneity. The phenomenon is not predominant here except obviously on the sides of the hull of the ship.
That being said, we still get a very nice model of the Black Pearl, the name of this ship as it is used in the films of the saga but which LEGO has chosen not to mention anywhere without us really knowing why apart from the fact that it is a "creative decision made by LEGO and The Walt Disney Company", even if LEGO has chosen to contract the thing a little with a much less slender appearance than that of the boat seen on the screen.
In my opinion, there is a lack of almost ten centimeters of length here for this ship not to be a version with a slightly Chibi of the thing. The hull of the ship makes use of some meta-parts usually used for similar constructions including the ship of the set 4184 The Black Pearl, these are the elements that define the scale of the model here with five straight central sections instead of three on the 2011 Black Pearl.
If you're considering purchasing this box, don't let the various assembly steps spoiler for you too much, you'll be paying for that too. Nothing too complicated or technical here, you can build the Black Pearl while keeping an eye on the film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, just to immerse yourself in the atmosphere.
The product assembly follows the classic procedure, but we start with a hull without its bottom. We understand why later when it comes to assembling the support that will accommodate the ship and which integrates the bottom of the hull. It's a good idea, with rock-solid stability and the possibility of displaying the Black Pearl as if it were sailing with its hull submerged to the waterline in the middle of a diorama.
The 16 cannons can be deployed in groups of 8 via the dials placed at the rear of the ship and each of the two dials activates the mechanism concerned. Their integration is successful, the whole thing remaining discreet enough not to disfigure the model. You can also maneuver the rudder and easily access the two internal spaces via removable sections, so much the better for discussions between friends around the thing, notably the discovery of the captain's quarters. These features have the merit of being present and offering some interactions with the model, it's always something taken.
The ship makes extensive use of soft sails, which will inevitably end up gathering dust. As you know, I'm not a big fan of the material used for the 10 sails delivered here, which I find a bit cheap for a set selling for €350, but I'm not sure that using soft plastic sails would have been in better taste. In any case, those who want to install the Black Pearl in the middle of the show will probably have to get a display case capable of protecting it from dust.
Also, be careful of fingerprints on the hull; the black parts don't do much for this. It's also worth noting that you're avoiding the cheap roasting string often included with LEGO boats. The icing on the cake is that there are no stickers in this box.
In terms of figure selection, the set includes minifigures of Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Joshamee Gibbs, Mr. Cotton, Anamaria, Marty, Elizabeth Swann, and Hector Barbossa. It's never enough for those who always want more figures in their sets, but I think the selection is more than enough for a display product, and it's relevant considering that this product is directly based on the film. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl released in theaters in 2003.
The pad printing is successful, Jack Sparrow has taken on color since the 2011 version with a face that is now in keeping with the color of the neck pad printed on the character's torso. We will also remember the figurehead with the wings already seen since 2021 in the Vidiyo and Monkie Kid ranges but here delivered in Sand green. Too bad for the few pairs of neutral legs that smell of savings at LEGO.
Those who love the Pirates universe with a LEGO twist are probably already won over, and the few technical flaws I mentioned above won't discourage them. The retail price of this product is more likely to dampen the enthusiasm of some; you'll need to find €350 to afford this beautiful display model, which can occasionally become a real toy to display in a diorama.
It's hard to find fault with the rest, as the subject has only been covered once before and with much less ambition. This new interpretation of the Black Pearl by LEGO is, in my opinion, successful, it offers an entertaining assembly experience, a very satisfying result, interesting features and it allows for a relevant assortment of minifigs.
