Today we take a very quick tour of the content of the LEGO Marvel set 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle, a box of 223 pieces that will be available on the official online store, in LEGO Stores as well as at a few other retailers from December 1, 2024 at the public price of €54,99.
Between the reduced inventory and the mind-boggling retail price of this box, one could almost imagine that it is a reference stamped 4+ but this is not the case and it is indeed a "classic" derivative product intended for young fans of the Marvel universe.
As you know, this box is based on the movie Captain America: Brave New World whose theatrical release is now expected for February 2025 after being postponed twice. It therefore theoretically highlights one of the scenes from the film in which four protagonists confront each other around a mini-ship whose interpretation in LEGO version is not very appealing. However, it remains to be seen what the source of inspiration for this mini-ship is, it is difficult to really assess its relevance at this stage.
As you might expect, the ship of less than 200 pieces is assembled very quickly, the longest step being applying the large handful of stickers provided to the flying machine. We quickly conclude that these few bricks are only there to justify the product's "construction toy" designation, which incidentally offers some fun possibilities via the two Stud Shooters integrated and the cockpit accessible, and that the essential is obviously elsewhere.
Four figures are included in this box: Sam Wilson as Captain America, Lieutenant Joaquin Torres as Falcon, mutant Ruth Bat-Seraph also known as Sabra, and President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross as Red Hulk.
The casting is interesting with a Sam Wilson who changes outfit after the book version LEGO Marvel Character Encyclopedia available since October 2024, that Series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier delivered in one of the LEGO Marvel Studios bags 71031 Collectible Minifigure Series (2021) as well as that of the exclusive minifig to San Diego Comic-Con 2015 so inspired by the crossover Secret Wars. This new minifig is accomplished, even if the pad-printed legs that could have been used here will remain reserved for the version exclusive to the encyclopedia.
I am less of a fan of the combination of parts for the wings which prevent the character from standing without having to lean the figurine forward and laboriously search for the balance point (The supports visible in the photos are not provided by LEGO). The result seems a little crude and lacking in finesse, I preferred the more "light" solution used for the bagged minifig from the LEGO Marvel Studios series 71031 Collectible Minifigure SeriesThe Redwing drone is symbolized here by a sticker, a pad-printed version would have been appreciated, especially at the price of the box.
Joaquin Torres aka Falcon has the same stability problem as the one whose role he is taking over, and it is the same observation: the minifig is superb, the wings are a little cruder. The mutant Ruth Bat-Seraph is here ordinary even if the torso of this character is very correct. The rest of the figurine is an assembly of elements already seen elsewhere: the head of Pansy Parkinson (Harry Potter), the legs of Electro and a bunch of generic figurines from the CITY range and a hair available at LEGO since 2009.
Finally, we get a new, never-before-seen Red Hulk figurine that takes over from the one delivered in 2017 in the LEGO Marvel set. 76078 Hulk vs. Red hulk. Nothing looks more like a "BigFig" than another "BigFig", it's up to each person to see if this format suits them: Hulk would have had a little trouble being satisfied with the minifig format, this solution which is nevertheless not to scale has its fans and its detractors.
The pad printing is a bit rough here on the legs of the character with edges that are not completely covered with ink on my copy. It remains to be seen whether the figurine is consistent with the appearance of Ross who has become all red, embodied on screen by Harrison Ford, even if it seems to me that this Red Hulk is just an evolution of the generic version of 2017 with a few additional fringes on the shorts.
In short, you will have understood, LEGO is selling here four figurines and a few bricks for €55 and even if it will quickly be possible to obtain this product for much less expensive elsewhere than on the manufacturer's official online store, we can be surprised by this unreasonable price which reminds us of the similar pricing policy already applied for the LEGO Marvel set. 76232 The Hoopty with its 420 pieces and its three minifigs sold for €94.99.
However, it is difficult to blame LEGO for taking advantage of the fans' craze for Marvel universe minifigs, as many people only buy these boxes to extract the different characters and conscientiously line them up in Ribba frames. The manufacturer would therefore be wrong to deprive itself of maximizing its margin, since fans buy without flinching and do not seem to tire of paying full price for these boxes, judging by the figures communicated by LEGO each year.
As Coluche said: "When you think that if people just stopped buying them, they would stop selling.". We all know that it won't happen, we'll just have to try to find the most opportune moment to pay a little less for this set than at LEGO.
