Today we are quickly interested in the content of the LEGO Marvel set 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle, a box of 736 pieces available via the official online store since January 1, 2025 at the public price of €99,99.
The topic covered here: the airport battle seen in the film Captain America: Civil War released in theaters in 2016. This is not the first time that LEGO has dealt with the thing, the sets 76051 Super Hero Airport Battle et 76067 Tanker Truck Takedown marketed in 2016 then allowed you to have fun reproducing this battle with a fairly decent overall playset.
LEGO continues to explore the subject by offering a new interpretation of this event this year, in the form of a product that is somewhere between a playset and an exhibition model.
One might indeed wonder what LEGO is trying to offer here and who this product is aimed at. At first glance, and because we get a board with several slots allowing us to stage the characters provided, a Quinjet equipped with Stud Shooters as well as a feature that causes two oil barrels to eject, we can imagine that LEGO is targeting the clientele of young fans of the Marvel universe.
Looking more closely, we quickly realize that there is nothing here to really have fun with other than the characters provided and the whole thing looks like a simple exhibition diorama for adult fans who do not want to be cluttered with the classic playset which would take up too much space on their shelves. Why not, there was undoubtedly material to return to the events concerned by offering the ultimate and definitive staging which would allow fans to move on to something else.
The result is a ersatz playset that seeks to appeal to a wide audience and which, in my opinion, completely misses its objectives. The game board is incredibly sad, there is no airport to be seen, not even a credible piece of hangar, the big Ant-Man figurine struggles to do better than the version in the set 76256 Ant-Man Construction Figure whose format and appearance it takes up with a few details and there is hardly anything but the (too) small Quinjet which finds vague favor in my eyes in this box despite a reduction in volume which makes it almost anecdotal. I also prefer the version on the same scale seen in the set 76269 Avengers Tower.
The minifigure offering is quite comprehensive, even if it's far from exhaustive, with Captain America, Winter Soldier, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Black Widow, and Black Panther. For €100, LEGO could have still gone all the way with the missing characters, such as Vision, Hawkeye, and War Machine.
Of the eight characters included, only two are new: Iron Man in Mark 46 version and Winter Soldier. The latter could have benefited from a pad-printed arm, but LEGO decided that it was not necessary. Iron Man's MK 46 armor has already been treated by LEGO in the set 76051 Super Hero Airport Battle, this new variant available for the moment only in this box will undoubtedly please the most complete collectors.
For the rest, the six other characters use elements already available elsewhere: Black Panther is also delivered this year identically in the set 76310 Iron Man Car & Black Panther vs. Red Hulk, the Falcon minifig is the one from the sets 76269 Avengers Tower (2023) with here a new interpretation of the wings.
Captain America's torso and Scarlet Witch's torso have been available since 2021, Spider-Man's torso is the one seen in the set 76218 Sanctum Sanctorum, the Black Widow one is also in the set 76313 Marvel Logo & Minifigures.
Many of these elements reused here will also be present in the set 76323 Avengers: Endgame Final Battle planned for May 1, 2025, a box which also tries to be the ultimate diorama on a specific subject but which also misses its point.
If we're being lenient, this is a bit of a sloppy summary of what Marvel fans would like to see on their shelves without chasing minifigs into different boxes. I understand the idea, but I think it's poorly executed.
The large Ant-Man figurine gives a bit of volume to the whole but we get lost in terms of scale with a mini Quinjet which is no longer consistent with the majority of characters delivered here in minifig format. The display tray is too compact and stingy with decorations, it becomes visually too confusing when the characters are staged there and it is intended to fill the corner of a shelf, there is nothing to see on the back of the two longest sides. If we add the large handful of stickers to stick and the absence of important characters, this product becomes in my opinion even more dispensable unless you have nothing else on the subject in your collection, especially for 100 €.
Fortunately, this set is already available elsewhere than at LEGO for a little less than the manufacturer's asking price. It's still too expensive for two truly new minifigs, but those who absolutely want to add the new interpretation of Iron Man's MK46 armor to their Ribba frames can do so for a few euros less:
