77256 lego speed champions time machine from back to the future review 1

Today we'll take a quick look at the contents of the LEGO Speed Champions set. 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future, a box of 357 pieces which will be available on the official online store as well as at some retailers from January 1, 2026 at the public price of €27,99.

As you know from the product announcement, LEGO promises us here that we can assemble two versions of the DeLorean MC-12 seen on screen: the one from the first film of the saga released in 1985 and the one from the second installment released in 1989. We will see later that this is indeed the case and switching from one version to the other is relatively simple.

It's worth noting right away that this DeLorean isn't covered in stickers and uses a good number of printed pieces. This is good news for a LEGO Speed Champions set, as we know these products usually make extensive use of various stickers. There are only seven stickers here, and the only slight drawback is that the ones on a gray background don't perfectly match the color of the car's body.

Assembling the DeLorean is a quick process: the vehicle's chassis is the standard, often-included part found in sets of this range, and the rest is easily installed. The windshield is attached to the roof and the part is pad-printed, but the finish leaves something to be desired, with some burrs at the corners, which is a bit of a shame.

As for the rest, it's logically the rear of the car that monopolizes a large portion of the small parts provided, resulting in a model that I find quite satisfactory at this scale. It's detailed, with representations of the vehicle's mechanics that are necessarily symbolic, but everything remains believable.

The switch between the two versions occurs very late in the assembly phase of the common part of the model. The version change only requires three steps: changing the license plate, installing Mr. Fusion at the rear, and leveling the four wheels using the provided parts.

No unnecessary piles of parts at the end; it's well-executed, and it's easy to revert to the drivable version of the DeLorean. The most dedicated collectors can therefore purchase two sets without worrying about having too many extra parts to display both versions on their shelves.

Two minifigures are included in this box: Doc Brown and Marty McFly. The Marty McFly minifigure is completely new in this form, featuring a sleeveless jacket reminiscent of the accessory seen on Cooper's shoulders in the 2024 LEGO DREAMZzz set. 71484 Cooper's Robot Dinosaur C-Rex.

Too bad about the neutral legs, the printed version of the element seen in the LEGO set 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine Having it available since 2022 would have been welcome. The character's head is also that of Han Solo, Cedric Diggory, Hawkeye, Steve Rogers, and Ikaris.

The Doc Brown figure also features plain legs, but it boasts a nice, unique torso and head. It looks great from both the front and the back.

Overall, I'm quite impressed with this Speed Champions scale model of the DeLorean. There are inevitably some aesthetic shortcuts imposed by the format, but the essential attributes of this iconic vehicle are all there. It's a shame about the few technical flaws; one would expect better from a manufacturer whose business has been this for 90 years.

The discrepancy between 3D renderings or heavily edited versions on the official website and reality is becoming an increasingly serious problem. There are many situations where the initial promise isn't fully kept from a technical standpoint, and this is yet another example.

In the online images of the DeLorean on the product page, the background of the side stickers is clearly the same color as the vehicle's body, which is far from the case in reality. This isn't enough to change my mind about buying the product, but I must admit I'm still disappointed.

I finally got to test the effect of the vehicle mounted on the magnetic levitation stand I've already mentioned here, and I find the result quite convincing. As you probably already know, this stand is available for purchase, among other things. at Amazon or for a little less at AliExpress It is a bit expensive for what it offers, so it's up to you to decide if it's worth it, especially since you have to leave it plugged in all the time.
