The LEGO ICONS set 10356 Star Trek: USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D (€379,99) has not been universally acclaimed by fans, and everyone has an opinion on the manufacturer's performance in relation to the brand's designers' vision. Moreover, this is not the first time a construction toy manufacturer has attempted the risky task of trying to recreate the Enterprise with building bricks.

Mattel (MEGA BLOKS), Hasbro (Kre-O), and even the smaller German manufacturer Blue Brixx, which held the license between 2021 and 2024, have all tried their hand at similar projects in the past, with varying degrees of success. Before the arrival of the LEGO version, many fans of the franchise turned to the toy offered by Playmobil in 2021, a product that is no longer strictly a construction toy but offers interesting display possibilities.

It is obviously necessary to put into context the products of which I offer a selection below: most of them were marketed at a time when the level of finish was often much less satisfactory, at LEGO as elsewhere, and these models, some of which are composed of only a few hundred pieces, did not offer the level of finish of the ICONS range set that LEGO offers this year.

I still wanted to get a general idea of what already existed on the subject in order to put the aesthetic flaws I noticed in LEGO's version into perspective. Two products in the gallery below seem acceptable to me: the Blue Brixx set version 104183 Star Trek USS Enterprise NCC-1701 launched in 2022 and that of the Mattel MEGA BLOKS set Star Trek USS Enterprise NCC-1701 Released in 2016. The 2013 Kre-O version was a playset without any particular ambition; we can't blame Hasbro for having totally sacrificed aesthetics in favor of playability.

The selection listed below is not exhaustive, but it is representative of what different toy manufacturers have done with the license they held. It's unclear at this stage whether LEGO will exploit the franchise to its fullest extent, like Blue Brixx, which released a massive number of ships between 2021 and 2024. I wouldn't bet on a full range of ICONS sets with several thousand pieces, but I wouldn't say no to a small series of ships in the same format. Midi Scale.

I hope that this selection of derivative products will at least give you a clearer idea of what has already been offered on the subject in the past; I have only kept the officially licensed derivative products and I have deliberately omitted MOCs sold without authorization by individuals or alternative "manufacturers" who do not bother with various and sundry contracts.
