All collectors have at least once asked the question when contemplating their many boxes stacked in a corner of the house: Is it really possible to insure your collection of LEGO sets? After all, it is now possible to insure anything and everything, so why not LEGO sets. The subject has recently returned to the center of discussions following the burglary of which was a victim. the Youtuber Republicattak.
More precisely: Is it really possible to insure a collection of LEGO sets taking into account the real value of the products concerned and without suffering any discount (deductible as for a classic home insurance contract, deduction linked to the obsolescence applied? on stolen products) in the event of a claim? This is indeed possible because there are insurance products specially designed for collectibles.
The principle is simple: You estimate your collection, you declare the amount you wish to guarantee and the insurer communicates the amount of the annual premium to be paid. Please note, this is indeed insurance for which it is you who declare the amount to be insured. In the event of a claim (theft, fire, water damage, etc.), you must provide the expert in charge of assessing the damage with all the information that will allow him to confirm your initial assessment.
In any case, the compensation will obviously not be able to exceed the amount for which you are insured. If you've intentionally downplayed the value of your collection, that's too bad for you. If you overestimated it, you will have to do battle with the expert who will not fail to verify your statements by any means he deems useful.
It is therefore prudent to make a complete and exhaustive inventory of your precious sets and their condition, to take numerous photos of the boxes concerned in their storage environment, to keep any purchase invoices and to prepare a list of tools. that will convince the expert of the merits of your assessment. Bricklink and its history of sales and average prices on each reference, for example, is a good starting point. Better to be prepared for the worst so as not to regret later having taken the file lightly by being content to sleep soundly, reassured by the signed contract.
Le Roederer broker for example associated with the insurer ERGO to offer a product that truly meets the expectations of collectors, without deductibles or incredible constraints with the following annual premiums on arrival: € 145 for a collection of sets estimated between € 0 and € 10.000, € 214 for a value between 10.000 and 25.000, 282 € for a value between 25.000 and 50.000 € and 351 € for an insured value between 50.000 and 75.000 €.
Another detail to check before signing a specific contract: the security conditions of your home and / or the storage space dedicated to your LEGO products. Some insurers may require you to install an alarm there or others will be content with a three-point closure on the main accesses to the area in question. The same goes for the protection of the glass parts placed less than 3 meters from the ground: an insurer will ask you to install burglar-proof glass or bars where others will require an alarm.
Each year, or in the event of a substantial change in the value of your collection, you will have to re-declare the amount to be insured and the amount of your premium will be adjusted accordingly.
Please note, this type of contract is governed by the insurance code to which special conditions are added, so you will find the usual exclusions relating to riots, zombies, nuclear explosions, the end of the world, etc. but also provisions relating to collector's products: no guarantee for the aging of the products, damage caused by rodents, damage resulting from the action of light or changes in temperature, etc. Check these specific provisions carefully for not have any bad surprises in the event of a claim.
If you want to know more, you can contact Jean-Brice Schwob of Roederer by email (jbschwob@roederer.fr) or by phone at 06 31 70 13 74. He is also an AFOL, he knows what we are talking about here and he will be able to advise you according to your needs.
