Press conference: LEGO reveals its figures for 2017

LEGO has just published its results for the year 2017. We knew since the announcement of the interim results for the first half of 2017 that the year would not be the best for the manufacturer but the seasonality of the toy market and the holiday season. year will not have helped raise the bar.

  • 7% decrease in turnover (from 37,9 billion DKK in 2016 to 35,0 billion).
  • 17% decrease in operating profit (from DKK 12,4 billion in 2016 to DKK 10,4 billion).
  • 17% decrease in net profit (from DKK 9,4 billion in 2016 to DKK 7,8 billion).
  • The operating margin fell from 32,8% in 2016 to 29,6%.
  • LEGO has invested 1,5 billion DKK (expansion of production capacities) against 2,9 billion in 2016.
  • The number of group employees fell from 19061 (2016) to 17534 in 2017 after an 8% reduction in the workforce.

Sales declined in the US and European markets while the Chinese market posted double-digit growth. In 2018, the group's development will also go through Africa and the Middle East with the opening of offices in Dubai.

LEGO tries to reassure by citing a significant increase in sales at the end of the year in seven of the twelve main markets for the group and a drop in revenues partly due to the priority given to the disposal of stocks already present in the whole of the distribution chain.

As for the ranges that “performed” in 2017, LEGO stands out the usual list: City, DUPLO, Creator, Friends, Ninjago and Star Wars.
