As announced a few days ago, the LEGO Ideas set 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay is now available on the official online store at the retail price of 199.99 € / 209.00 CHF.
For those who hoped to benefit from the offer to get the small 40371 Easter Egg set from 55 € purchase, it's missed. The promotional product in question is sold out even though the offer was initially scheduled to last until April 13.
As with all sets in the LEGO Ideas range, this new box will remain exclusive to the official LEGO online store for the next three months before then appearing on the shelves of other brands and being the subject of various promotions. and varied to save a few euros. So there is no rush to order this set, especially at this time.

New product announcements continue to follow at LEGO, which today unveils the LEGO Technic set 42111 Dom's Dodge Charger (1077 pieces - 109.99 €), a product derived from the saga Fast & Furious which reproduces Dominic Torreto's 1970 Dodge Charger R / T (Vin Diesel).
LEGO initially planned to rely on theatrical release Fast and Furious 9 to launch this derivative product. No luck, the film's release scheduled for May 2020 has been postponed to spring 2021. LEGO is not changing the schedule and maintains this announcement with an opening of pre-orders from today and an availability date set for April 27, 2020 .
Public price in France: 109.99 €. 99.99 € in Belgium, 129.00 CHF in Switzerland.
Regarding the product, I think LEGO could have shown a little more creativity to stick to the spirit of the Fast & Furious saga with its races and chases by providing two vehicles, including a slightly more colorful model, instead of one. As it stands, I find this set a bit sad.
On the menu here, a 1:13 scale vehicle with generous dimensions (39 cm long, 16 cm wide), a V8 engine with moving pistons, a steering, a double wishbone suspension, two NOS (Nitrous Oxide Systems ) in the trunk, a fire extinguisher and some stickers.
Today we are talking about the three helmets that will be marketed from April 19 in the LEGO Star Wars range, the references 75274 Tie Fighter Pilot Helmet (724 pieces), 75276 Stormtrooper Helmet (647 pieces) and 75277 Boba Fett Helmet (625 pieces). I was able to ask some questions by email to the three designers in charge of the project, Niels Mølgård Frederiksen and César Carvalhosa Soares, designers and Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Design Director, and I give you their answers below.
Will: LEGO has already produced two busts of characters from the Star Wars universe in 2019 [SDCC exclusive 77901 Sith Trooper Bust & 75227 Darth Vader Bust], are the helmets launched this year an evolution of these busts or a totally independent concept? Will the idea of busts be declined again in the future with new models?
| Jens: The two busts already on the market are not directly related to the new helmets that we have just announced, they are totally different ideas and projects.
The helmets are therefore not intended to replace the concept developed around busts already marketed and the two ideas could probably coexist in the future. We obviously cannot communicate explicitly on the future evolution of these two concepts. |
Will: This new range of products is identified as intended for an adult audience. Apart from the packaging stamped 18+ and the marketing effort that presents them as exhibition models, what other arguments are at work to make these products real models for adult fans?

Jens: These new helmets are in fact part of a range of products primarily intended for an adult audience. We also wanted this target to be displayed explicitly through the design of the packaging of these new products, but also through the products themselves. These are models intended to be exhibited, they are not intended to be used as children's toys. The editing experience is clearly designed to satisfy an adult audience and the 18+ label has allowed us to free ourselves from certain constraints relating to the complexity of the model and the techniques used. We were thus able to develop truly detailed models that are faithful to their real counterparts. |
| Niels: We tried to find the best possible balance: We wanted these helmets to be neither too bulky nor too compact.
As these are three-dimensional models, a 10% increase in the size of the product would have involved a significant increase in the volume of the object and therefore the presence of many additional elements, which would also have impacted the public price. of each of these helmets. |
Will: What was the most difficult challenge in designing these helmets?
| Niels: For Boba Fett, the biggest challenge was to reproduce the yellow stripes on the side of the helmet because we absolutely wanted to integrate this characteristic detail by using parts and not stickers or decorations that would not have worked there in the model. It didn't take long for me to find an acceptable solution but I think this is the detail that gave me the most difficulty on this model. |
Will: There is a very marked presence of the studs on the surface for each of these helmets. Is this a deliberate artistic choice, or the consequence of a particular constraint?
| Cesar: The presence of the studs was a deliberate choice for several reasons: We wanted it to be immediately visible that these are LEGO products even to someone who is not familiar with our products.
The LEGO DNA of these helmets should show through at first glance. But it's also important to remember that the techniques used here have made it easier for us to "sculpt" some of the organic details that are difficult to interpret on these reproductions of helmets. |
Will: Despite all efforts to present these products as collector's items and exhibits for adult fans, we cannot escape the usual stick-on stickers. What to answer to all those who regret the presence of stickers in these sets?
| Jens: We know that many adult fans prefer the parts to be pad printed rather than having to stick stickers on their models. On these helmets, we use a combination of the two processes to achieve the result that you have been able to discover.
One of the reasons why some elements are not pad printed: some parts / shapes are difficult or even impossible to pad print. It should also be remembered that we cannot add an unlimited number of pad printed elements on each model. On the other hand, we have decided that the identification plate of each of these helmets will be pad printed because it is an important element of these exhibition models which will remain visible from all angles. |
Will: Can fans prepare to collect a whole range of helmets from the Star Wars universe or will these three products remain one?one shot"no further action? Will other licenses [Marvel, DC Comics] get the same treatment in the future?
| Jens: As you can imagine, there is not much we can say about future products, it will take patience to find out more! |
We now know the distribution of a box of 60 sachets of collectible minifigs series 20 (ref. 71027) and there will be three complete sets of 16 characters per box, the most common minifigs being the Power Ranger, the knight and the diver, all three delivered in five copies.
It will therefore be possible to share a box of three and possibly resell the 12 additional minifigs to amortize the cost of acquiring each complete series of 16 characters.

LEGO today unveils the LEGO Ideas set 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay, a box freely inspired by the project The Pirate Bay by Pablo Sánchez Jiménez alias Bricky_Brick. The project in question had in its time gathered the 10.000 supports necessary for its passage to the examination phase in just 25 days and it had finally been definitively validated by LEGO in September 2019.
Nostalgic fans of the Pirates range then found something to plead their case with the manufacturer and all their hopes were placed in Pablo Sánchez Jiménez's project. The manufacturer confirms that he has heard the message and is now offering a set that I believe can satisfy even the most demanding of fans.
For those who have a feeling of déjà-vu, this new set of 2545 pieces with its vintage packaging at will features the Black Seas Barracuda ordered by Captain Redbeard, seen in the set 6285 marketed in 1989 and reissued in 2002 under the reference 10040. This is not the first tribute to the set of 1989, a micro version of the Black Seas Barracuda was indeed present in the set. 40290 60 Years of the Brick offered in February 2018 by LEGO.
We therefore discover that the boat has run aground on an island and that it is now used as headquarters for Captain Redbeard and seven other characters all inspired by the Pirates range including Lady Anchor, Robin Loot, Tattooga, Quartermaster Riggins, Jack "Dark Shark" Doobloons and the Port and Starboard twins. Some animals also populate the place with a shark, a pig, two parrots, three crabs, and two frogs. No pirates without corpses, two skeletons are provided.
The real stroke of genius of the set is to offer the possibility of relaunching the Black Seas Barracuda by dissociating it from the island on which it is stranded. The hull divided into three modules can be recomposed to obtain a presentable boat that will prevent latecomers from spending their money in the secondary market to afford the initial version of the Black Seas Barracuda. The full model displays respectable measurements at 64cm wide, 32cm deep and 59cm high.
I sometimes criticize LEGO for straying a little too far from the spirit of the reference project when it comes to adapting an idea that has brought together many fans, but I think that here it was necessary, on the contrary, to frankly go with a clear and crisp reference to the Pirates range launched over 30 years ago. It is now done and even the most nostalgic fans who expected a lot from this box should largely find what they are looking for.
Nostalgia also comes at a price: the LEGO Ideas set 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay will be available from April 1, 2020 on the official online store at the public price of 199.99 € / 209.00 CHF.
