Among the many sets already announced around the release of The LEGO Batman Movie, the reference 70906 The Joker Notorious Lowrider stands out immediately by the dominant color of its content, which contrasts with the very austere Bat-things, predominantly black. And that's good.
This box of 433 pieces (retail price 49.99 €) allows to assemble a vehicle that I find very successful and which in my eyes largely justifies its purchase, even if the three minifigs provided are obviously a weighty argument. I also appreciate that all of the parts provided are used for the main model of the set. No lamppost, end of wall or piece of sidewalk, everything is in the "Lowrider" of the Joker.
Almost all the codes of these machines popularized by a generation of American rappers are present. It is Pimp My Ride very flashy with The LEGO Batman Movie sauce and it works. A double row of headlights at the front would have made it possible to stick a little more to the look of Chevrolet Impala or Cadillac Eldorado of the vehicle, but it is quibble.
While the interior of some LEGO vehicles may not always allow for more than one minifigure, this one has two seats spacious enough for your characters to sit comfortably. I did it, you will too.
Who says Lowrider says modified suspensions to allow the vehicle to roll in high or low position and even to jump, history to amuse the gallery and to be noticed. The Joker is the dream owner for this type of gear which befits its natural extravagance.
The LEGO version is therefore equipped with a rather efficient suspension system. A simple pressure on the front or the rear of the car is enough to lower or raise the suspensions concerned. Each buyer of this box will therefore probably spend a few long minutes trying all the possible combinations.
Under the car, two sets of two rubber bands associated with a simple mechanism do the job and allow you to choose the position of each wheel. At the risk of rambling, LEGO does not provide replacement rubber bands. Time and numerous manipulations will sooner or later get the better of these consumables which will then have to be replaced to maintain the main functionality of the set. And yes, I consider the stickers, the capes and the rubber bands as consumables as opposed to the plastic elements which are themselves much more "durable" products.
You will tell me that finding two replacement lambda rubber bands is not very complicated. I prefer to use those provided by LEGO: they are perfectly adapted to the mechanical result desired by the designer and I avoid mixing elements not from LEGO production with my sets. It's very personal, I'll grant you that.
Another feature which for once has been judiciously concealed so as not to unnecessarily disfigure the vehicle: the two missile launchers which are installed in the trunk. It's aesthetically relevant and it adds a little fun to this function. The two missile launchers are activated by the two blue Technic pins visible in the middle of the speakers located on the rear shelf. It's discreet and that's good.
I almost forgot that this Lowrider comes with three minifigs: The Joker, Harley Quinn and Batgirl. We can discuss this carnivorous smile that appears on the face of the Joker, but Harley Quinn and Batgirl are very successful. Double face for everyone, pad printing galore. Batgirl mask comes in two parts (ponytail comes off), Harley Quinn comes with two roller skates and a pad-printed baseball bat.
In summary, this set is one of my favorites from this line based on The LEGO Batman Movie. Regardless of the screen presence of this vehicle, its looks and this suspension-related functionality are convincing enough arguments that I consider purchasing it. The three minifigs are a luxury bonus for a very complete product, playable and well in the spirit of LEGO.
To give you a more precise idea of the size of this Lowrider compared to some of the other vehicles in the range, here is a bonus:
