I'm talking to you again today quickly about the LEGO 2K Drive video game, I played it for a few days and even if I ended up getting a little tired of the game's mechanics, I must admit that I still amused a bit. Solo, nothing very exciting, it's a classic arcade racing game as there are buckets of them, with its bonuses, its more or less difficult circuits and its secondary missions without much interest but which prolong the pleasure a little . If you like LEGO, you necessarily go through a short discovery phase of everything you can break or build in the game, even if it is above all a racing game.

The ability to create and customize vehicles is a plus but I'm not really sensitive to it even if the editor (the garage) is rather ergonomic and those used to the usual digital construction tools should at least spend a few hours there with a quite impressive inventory of parts available.

It is obviously not a car simulation in the literal sense of the term, with a piloting that seemed to me closer to that of a Mario Kart than that of a more demanding racing game and the technical characteristics of the different vehicles ultimately seem to me to have little impact on their performance or handling. In any case, not enough for me to remember noticing a glaring difference between two machines.

The play area is large enough not to get bored too quickly with several thematic biomes to explore, but it's the game mechanics that ended up boring me with frankly long and laborious progression in story mode. Moreover, it is not theOpen World hoped for by some even though the different biomes are big enough to get lost in and not feel like going in circles.

To accumulate experience points, there are only two possibilities: embark on the systematic execution of many more or less interesting secondary missions or participate in the same races in a loop. Same observation for the virtual "currency" of the game, the Brickflouzes, distributed sparingly to encourage the player to go and buy them with real euros via the integrated store. It's petty, knowing that those who have the patience to explore all the possibilities of the game will in my opinion be the youngest LEGO fans.

LEGO could have imposed the absence of micro-transactions in the specifications of the game, the manufacturer is often very attentive concerning the licensed video games regularly offered by different publishers and I have a little trouble understanding how he was able to allow this feature in a game aimed at a very young audience.

The most successful part of the game is in my opinion the possibility of playing two in split screen and this is where the fun is at its maximum thanks to the boosters and other weapons distributed on the road and which allow you to catch up at the last moment or at least to compensate for a driving error which caused a few places to be lost. The circuits are well designed, the behavior of the vehicles is very correct with good handling and a real feeling of speed. Like in Mario Kart, we start the game, we race and we move on.

So I won't try to finish the game and all the quests it contains, I don't have the patience or the time for that. On the other hand, playing it from time to time with the family seems to me a good solution. Although everyone around me prefers Mario Kart and the excuse of the LEGO universe with its usual little touches of humor will not be enough to distract them from their favorite arcade mode racing game.

Let's be honest, no matter how much buzz this video game gets in the small world of LEGO fans who see here a new opportunity to build contraptions and smash stuff while racing against AI-powered competitors, moreover a little weak, or against their friends locally or on the network, it does not revolutionize the genre and it will not mark the history of video games. It is far from being the best LEGO game ever marketed and it is above all a game that reuses the usual recipe of many other titles by integrating the specificities of the brand as best as possible. It's well done but anyone who already has Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing on their consoles will do without it.

If you want to test this game without delay, be satisfied with the basic edition sold for 50 € or 60 €, nothing justifies spending double on a boosted edition for a few bonuses without much interest. Otherwise, wait a few months, it still smells of video games that will end up at a bargain price just about everywhere to sell off stocks.

If you've played LEGO 2K Drive, don't hesitate to give your impressions in the comments, those who are still hesitant may find something to tip the scales one way or the other before spending their money. .
