We are continuing this series of tests of The LEGO Batman Movie novelties with the reference 70914 Bane Toxic Truck Attack. In this box of 366 pieces, a bigfig (Bane), two minifigs (Batman and Mutant Leader), two vehicles and a toxic waste tank.
The official pitch of the set is promising:
Bane and the leader of the mutant gang are attacking the city using their poison truck! Batman is set to step up in this exciting LEGO BATMAN THE MOVIE: Bane's Toxic Truck Attack set, featuring Bane's Toxic Truck, Whirly-Bat Helicopter, and a miniature toxic waste model with an explosion function. This six-wheeled truck features a four-wheel rear suspension, six-stud rapid shooter, and a detachable toxic tank element. Includes two minifigures, a large minifigure, assorted game-inspired weapons, and accessories including Batman's Batarang, Mutant Gang Leader Torch, and Bane's Venom Backpack. |
We start with the Whirly-Bat and it's up to everyone to assess the relevance of the thing. Some will see it as a truly disappointing machine, provided by LEGO to furnish, and others will invoke the intentional contrast between Bane's over-armed and aggressive vehicle and the fragile and a little ridiculous side of this mini-helicopter with wheels. I first agreed with the first explanation before changing my mind and preferring the second.
The machine is a little ridiculous but so offbeat that it becomes almost sympathetic. It is in the spirit of the film and this is the essential.
Opposite, Bane and Mutant Leader tumble into an imposing six-wheeled all-terrain vehicle. The machine is faithful to the one seen in the film (see capture above), with one detail: No hubcaps on the front wheels for the model of set 70914. The stickers obviously help to improve the final rendering of the vehicle and to give it its "armored" appearance.
Note the presence of Osito, the teddy bear who kept company with Bane in the prison of Peña Duro, via two stickers to be placed on the body of the vehicle.
The cockpit can only accommodate a classic minifigure, in this case Mutant Leader. Bane has to be content to stay in the back and manipulate his rotating cannon equipped with a sight. A removable Venom canister is attached to the rear of the all-terrain. The whole is compact, solid and easy to handle.
The official description speaks of a "four-wheel rear suspension ". Let's not get carried away, there is no suspension. Both wheels are mounted on a bar Technic fixed to the frame by its center which allows this tilting effect. Everything else, including Round Plates 1x1 stacked visible in the photo below, it is decoration.
For playability, LEGO has added to this set an accessory that allows you to eject a few canisters of toxic waste. We put the carboy in the tank, we press the Tile yellow and it jumps. Three canisters are provided. Simple but effective.
Bane is finally available in a format that pays homage to the character. The bigfig is beautiful and the venom injection system is nicely done.
It was about time that LEGO offered us a large-format version of the character after the five classic minifigs already marketed through the range System (7787 The Bat-Tank: The Riddler and Bane's Hideout, 76001 The Bat vs. Bane: Tumbler Chase, 6860 The Batcave), in the Mighty Micros set 76062 Robin vs. bane or via the expansion pack LEGO Dimensions 71240.
The Mutant Leader minifig is more basic, but the leader of the Mutant Gang doesn't call out for endless amounts of detail. He evolves shirtless and the LEGO version is faithful to the character created by Frank Miller seen in comics or animated series. The minifig is also delivered with a torch like the one held by Mutant Leader in The Dark Knight Returns.
This set is a good surprise, it allows both to obtain a new version of Bane and a new character who will join the collection of fans of the DC Comics universe. The vehicles, for their part, bring significant playability to the whole.
This set is displayed at the public price of 49.99 € on the LEGO Shop. It's a bit expensive, but sooner or later this box will end up being offered with a substantial reduction by one brand or another.
Note: We do as usual, you have until June 3, 2017 at 23:59 p.m. to manifest yourself in the comments.
