24/03/2018 - 09:59 In my opinion... LEGO Ideas Reviews

lego ideas 21314 tron legacy 1

TRON is first a film released in 1982, with Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner followed 28 years later by a somewhat nanardesque but visually very successful sequel / tribute: TRON L'Héritage (TRON: Legacy).

The LEGO Ideas 21314 TRON Legacy set (34.99 € on the LEGO Shop) showcases motorcycles Light cycles and the characters present in the 2010 film. Let's be honest, the motorcycles of the original film are now visually obsolete and it was indeed better to take inspiration from the machines of TRON: Legacy.

lego ideas 21314 tron legacy minifigs fight

If you follow this blog, you know that I sometimes criticize LEGO for straying too far from the LEGO Ideas project that served as a starting point for the development of the final set. In this specific case, LEGO has once again allowed itself to "reinterpret" the idea of the initial project, but that's ultimately a good thing.
By digging a little on the LEGO Ideas platform, however, we find many projects based on the TRON license some of which feature several Light cycles with a presentation similar to that of set 21314. I suspect LEGO of having wanted to please everyone by offering a synthesis of the different ideas proposed.

That being said, when we talk about motorcycles Light cycles of TRON, we immediately think of the cult scene from the original 1982 film and for the younger ones to the equivalent scene in the 2010 film. Obviously, to really pay homage to the film, it takes two Light Cycles:

LEGO has understood this well and the set LEGO Ideas 21314 indeed allows us to obtain two of these virtual motorcycles. You won't get the ultimate building experience with this set, the two bikes are identical (it makes sense) and only differentiate by their dominant color.

LEGO Ideas 21314 TRON Legacy

Bonus: They roll, even if the axle is just a bar threaded into a Technic pin. No stickers in this set, everything is pad printed which guarantees an optimal exposure potential without having to replace or remove the stickers after a few years. The light trails attached to the back of the two Light cycles can be removed if you prefer to sacrifice the sense of movement.

lego ideas 21314 tron legacy glow dark

No light brick or light source in this set. For the LightCycle from Rinzler, LEGO uses fluorescent parts (trans neon orange), which allows a nice effect under black light. The LightCycle by Sam Flynn is not that lucky, too bad for a product derived from a film whose aesthetic is largely based on the lighting effects ...

LEGO Ideas 21314 TRON Legacy

The lower part of the two Light cycles is aligned with the wheels. The rendering is a little massive, far from the organic curves of the motorcycles seen in the film but it is also at this place that the two finally come to be fixed on the base.

It is possible to improve the thing a little by removing a few parts to restore a less clumsy look to the LightCycle without affecting the rigidity of the whole. You will be able to play with your Light cycles without hearing the unpleasant noise of the bar rubbing against the motorcycle:

LEGO Ideas 21314 TRON Legacy

The handlebars are badly placed on the LEGO version, it is much too high whereas in the film the pilot is really one with his machine. The standard size of the minifig also does not allow the legs to be transferred to the rear wheel for a truly aerodynamic position. in short, we know that it is TRON because this type of motorcycle only exists in the film, but when we look more closely, we quickly realize that the reproduction is ultimately very approximate.

LEGO Ideas 21314 TRON Legacy

When it comes to minifigs, LEGO is content with three of the characters from the 2010 film: Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), Quorra (Olivia Wilde) and Rinzler (Anis Cheurfa). Too bad for the homage to the 1982 film, Jeff Bridges (CLU), Bruce Boxleitner (TRON) and Cindy Morgan (YORI) would have deserved to be delivered in this set, just to please absolute fans of this universe.

LEGO Ideas 21314 TRON Legacy

Nothing to say about the three minifigs delivered in the set 21314, they are magnificent. the pad printing is perfect and the patterns of the coveralls are faithful to the outfits seen on the screen. Even the Flesh pad printed on Quorra's black shoulders and torso is convincing. Purists will appreciate the presence of the tattoo ISO on the character's left shoulder. San Flynn reuses Mr. Freeze's visor and Rinzler takes advantage of the Vulture seen in the set 76083 Beware the Vulture, here in black and with pad printing very faithful to the film version.

The Identity Discs are superb and are attached via a transparent bracket with tenons for Flynn and Quorra and via a bracket with Technic pin for Rinzler which carries two. the solution is relatively discreet, it works.

LEGO Ideas 21314 TRON Legacy

Despite its few approximations and other shortcuts in execution, this set is an honest tribute to the film. TRON Legacy. As it reproduces vehicles and characters from a film released 8 years ago, everyone's memory will immediately associate the contents of the box with the original license without necessarily remembering or worrying about the details. Bad positioning of the rider on the bike, rough hairstyle of Quorra, simplistic representation of Sam Flynn's helmet, we'll make do with it.

At 34.99 € the box with 230 pieces, 3 minifigs and a few pages in the instruction booklet to the glory of the film and the designers, this set is to be reserved for absolute fans of the TRON franchise who will have here thanks to the concept LEGO Ideas a one and only chance to own a product derived from this universe in their collection. As far as I'm concerned, I say yes.

LEGO Star Wars 75201 First Order AT-ST

Today we take a quick look at a set that does not really deserve all this attention: The LEGO Star Wars reference 75201 First Order AT-ST with its 370 pieces, its four characters and its crazy public price of 64.99 €.

Before getting to the heart of the matter, I would say all the same that I am a "complete" collector of the LEGO Star Wars range. I buy whatever comes out, be it good, less good or particularly bad, but I'm not a die-hard fan of everything LEGO can produce on the subject. Collecting doesn't always mean approving.

That being said, the set 75201 First Order AT-ST is a symbol in my eyes. This little box perfectly embodies the difference between what a LEGO toy can and should be and what a derivative product is made to order on behalf of the license holder concerned.

We are therefore no longer talking here of a construction toy allowing free rein to the creativity of those who acquire them. It is indeed a pure product derived from a work, this box reproducing in this specific case two scenes from a film and nothing else.

Star Wars The Last Jedi

The official product description speaks for itself: "... With this set, the child can stage a perilous LEGO® Star Wars mission by escaping with the First Order AS-ST ... Recreate your own scenes from the blockbuster Star Wars: The Last Jedi ..."It's also a bit pretentious, I saw in the film only two very short scenes that I can really reproduce with the contents of this box: the one where BB-8 takes control of an AT-ST whose cabin is torn off when the machine moves and the one where Finn and Rose flee using the machine, still piloted by BB-8.

LEGO Star Wars 75201 First Order AT-ST

LEGO therefore applied to reproduce these two scenes of fifteen seconds in total seen in the film. The Last Jedi and does it pretty well. The only problem is that this set only reproduces these two scenes even if it does it quite well. The name of the set is also misleading. It is not an AT-ST. These are two short scenes from a movie that feature a piece of AT-ST. "AT-ST Escape"Or"Shed Battle"would have been more appropriate names.

Star Wars The Last Jedi

LEGO could have proposed a removable cabin for the machine, just to be able to reuse this AT-ST in other adventures out of the imagination of the youngest. Fans of the LEGO Star War range being particularly fond of these AT-STs, this set could even have become a bestseller with interesting content and successful features ... After all, this is the concept championed by the brand and incidentally by the description of the product.

The public price of the set also allowed some largesse in terms of parts. But no. Anyone who usually shows boundless indulgence for LEGO will have already drawn the usual response to this type of criticism: "... It's LEGO, build the rest yourself with your pieces ...". Too easy.LEGO Star Wars 75201 First Order AT-ST

Worse yet, the content of this set actually offers only limited playability and borders on the pure product of exhibition despite the two missile launchers placed under the frontal cannon. The AT-ST is not really capable of different poses due to a low number of joints in the legs. The rotation of the cabin, or what is left of it, via the dial placed at the back will not amuse many people. The young fan can always have fun killing Phasma with Finn ...

LEGO Star Wars 75201 First Order AT-ST

I could have forgiven the sloppy and rough side of the thing if the craft was at least complete and presentable in some diorama. Besides, let's leave aside "... the hangar lift to build ..."uninteresting with its basic mechanism and its measurements which do not even allow to reach the platform of the AT-ST.

Finally, let's talk about the public price of this box: 64.99 €. How did LEGO come to estimate that at this price, this set would find its audience? By counting on the success of the film and the hypothetically "iconic" character of these two scenes? By betting on the three minifigs of Finn, Rose (in First Order ) and Phasma already seen in the set 75103 First Order Transporter (2015) but delivered here with a helmet whose pad printing has been slightly refined and that collectors will therefore want to obtain whatever the rest of the contents of the box?

We will never really know by what chain of decisions this set ended up on the shelves of toy stores. On the other hand, we know that LEGO generally works on the basis of concept arts that are not always very explicit or faithful to the final result of the work concerned. We also know that Disney has a say in the products derived from its licenses. We can therefore always find some ready-made excuses to explain all the mediocrity of this box and to distribute fairly (and arbitrarily) the responsibilities between LEGO and Disney.

LEGO Star Wars 75201 First Order AT-ST

We will especially remember with nostalgia the set 75153 AT-ST Walker (2016) based on the action from the movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with its 449 parts, its complete AT-ST, its three minifigs including Baze Malbus and its public price of 54.99 € ...

In the end, I now watch the set 75098 Assault on Hoth (Ultimate Collector Series) released in 2016 with surprising benevolence, seeing it go down one place in the ranking of the worst LEGO Star Wars sets, brilliantly dethroned by this First Order AT-ST ...

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

And 18! The 18th series of collectible minifigs (ref. 71021) will be on sale from April 1st on the LEGO Shop, in LEGO Stores and in many brands. LEGO was kind enough to send me a box for me to give you my opinion on the 17 characters that make it up.

As usual, there is no question here of making a Prévert-style inventory of what each sachet contains. I am content to give you some impressions of each of the characters.

Regarding the distribution of the characters between the 60 sachets in the box (ref. 6213825), refer to the numbers displayed at the bottom of each photo.

It's the 40th anniversary of the minifig as it still exists today and LEGO is celebrating it by changing the color of the plate that serves as a display for each character. No pad printing on these media and that's a shame, even if the MOCeurs will say the opposite. A small logo mentioning this anniversary, like the one on the box and on the bags, would have been welcome.

Let's get rid of the "problem" with this series of collectible minifigs right away: It will be difficult to put all 17 characters together. LEGO has once again decided to give an exclusive side to this series by integrating a character that is more difficult to find.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

A single copy of the Classic Policeman, a minifigure that pays homage to the 600-2 set dating from 1978, is delivered in each box of 60 sachets. Even if you plan to band together to buy a box and divide up the (almost) full three sets that you find inside, two of you won't be able to get the cop.
If you decide to go feel the bag in the store in the hope of finding it, remember that the salespeople or a few morning AFOLs will probably have passed before you and you may end up empty-handed. You will only have your eyes (and Le Bon Coin or eBay) left to cry.

This minifigure is not exceptional, it is simply the exact replica of the 1978 version, here accompanied by a Tile which pays homage to the 600-2 set. Note that the 1978 minifigure was not pad printed at the time. The buttons and the badge of the police officer were on a sticker to stick on the chest.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

The two characters disguised as LEGO bricks are provided in number in each box and the brick that dresses them is obviously compatible with other LEGO parts. These minifigs would have deserved better than being sold for four euros. It is a beautiful synthesis of the LEGO universe with a cross-over original between bricks and minifigs. I wouldn't have said no if these characters had been offered for a promotion on the LEGO Shop.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

The type disguised as fireworks and the cactus woman are based on the same principle: A piece covers almost the entire minifigure with two side notches for the arms. It is successful, and it is even possible to choose the orientation of the branches of the cactus.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

The branches of the cactus are obviously removable, they are attached to the torso like the usual arms. A good point, the two costumes hold their place on the minifigures via the grip on the tenon of the head, even when turned over.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

The minifigure above is one of my favorites. Less for the costume as a whole than for being able to use the mini-car independently of the minifigure. The pilot and his helmet benefit from a very complete pad printing. Add to a Speed Champions diorama.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

The mini-car is superb with a little Lightning McQueen touch. It reminds me of the low-end small plastic cars of my childhood with the two axles to be fixed under a very simple frame. If LEGO decides one day to produce others in different colors, a merry-go-round is needed.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

The two characters below share a common characteristic, they probably have difficulty moving around. The two costumes are put on differently: The flowerpot takes place between the legs and the torso of the minifigure and the type on the right is inserted in the cake, as evidenced by the splash of pink cream on the chest. Original but I pass.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

If you get started in the bag testing, these two minifigs are incomparable, the bag is really inflated ... Overall, the blind identification of the contents of these bags is moreover rather easy, except perhaps for the two figures disguised in brick.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

The two children provided in this series are not really in disguise. They are content to each hold a balloon and are accompanied by gifts and cookies. The legs are successful with a double injection which allows to obtain a true yellow on the whole surface.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

It's better than a three-sided pad printing with a yellow that visually mixes with the color that serves as the support. A pair of yellow arms with white t-shirt sleeves is also always a good idea.
The young boy comes with two mini-sachets from the first series of collectible minifigs. Nice wink.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

To follow, two minifigs with nice accessories: the guy on the left carries the body of the spider on his back and the head of the beast in the form of a mask. It's a really successful costume with a nice pad printing on the chest.

I'm less impressed with the clown on the right, but I still spent a few long minutes admiring the two ballooning dogs. Hard to reuse elsewhere, but if you have a fun fair diorama, why not.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

Below, three more classic costumes, with a feeling of déjà vu. A pink skirt, a real mouse that changes us from the usual filthy LEGO rats, a pretty cat mask, there are still some nice accessories with these three characters.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

The unicorn shield with the very successful pad printing will certainly find its audience among fans of the Castle universe who will eventually be able to build up a small army under this banner. The sword is provided. Otherwise, the guy disguised as the unicorn will join the similar minifigure seen in series 13.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

Finally, a very original cowboy with a half-horse that goes around his neck. The piece is a little soft, the neckband was a little crushed in the bag. The cowboy's torso is magnificent, almost a pity that it is hidden by the half horse. lovers of Stetson will have four copies of this cowboy at their disposal in each box.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

The guy disguised as a dragon leaves me unmoved, but at least he has the merit of being entitled to a pretty mask and wings that are placed around his neck. I always have more trouble with red "LEGO" parts, I find them obsolete. It is also on these parts, often slightly transparent, that I have the feeling of having in my hands a plastic of inferior quality to the rest of the LEGO production. Difficult to explain, I'll let you tell me if you have ever felt the same.

LEGO 71021 Collectible Minifigures Series 18

Note: The entire contents of the box provided by LEGO are involved. Three winners will be drawn. The first will receive the complete series with the Classic Policeman. the next two will receive a set of 16 characters. The additional minifigs will be distributed randomly among the three winners. To participate in the raffle, simply post a comment on this article before March 22 at 23:59 p.m.. You have every right to disagree with me, this is not eliminatory.

Update : The winners were drawn at random and were notified by email, their usernames are indicated below. Without a response from them to my request for contact details within 5 days, new winners will be drawn.

LEGO Star Wars 75205 Mos Eisley Cantina

The Cantina by Mos Eisley is one of the many chestnut trees in the LEGO Star Wars range with already three sets marketed by the brand. If the 2004 version (4501 Mos Eisley Winery) will not have left an imperishable memory for collectors as regards the building, that of 2014 was already more opulent (75052 Mos Eisley Winery - € 88.99).

The 2018 version (75205 Mos Eisley Winery - 376 pieces - 49.99 €) can also be seen as a addon pack for the set marketed in 2014 even if it brings its share of novelties.
This new box will allow the bravest to enlarge the Cantina, lengthen the bar counter, expand the Sandtroopers patrol and furnish a street corner with a new device that appears stealthily in the film.

Marketing policy requires, we end up with a box whose content reproduces a scene dating from 1977 dressed with the official visual imposed on all products derived from the film The Last Jedi. A bit anachronistic.

LEGO Star Wars 75205 Mos Eisley Cantina

Of the Cantina, there are only a few walls and a piece of open-air counter behind which Wuher will stand. No fun at "recreate the iconic scenes"that take place in the establishment, or it will be necessary to show a lot of imagination.

LEGO Star Wars 75205 Mos Eisley Cantina

To look good, LEGO still delivers something new to build in this set: The Landspeeder Ubrikkian 9000 Z001 seen in the movie. The LEGO version is immediately recognizable, there are not fifty such devices in the Star Wars universe.

LEGO Star Wars 75205 Mos Eisley Cantina

The achievement is just passable and you can only place one minifigure there while the machine is supposed to be able to carry up to three people. Nothing very serious, this Ubrikkian 9000 will do the trick to flesh out a diorama placed on a shelf.

For the rest, the alcove in which Han and Greedo discuss before shooting themselves will also do the trick. LEGO has thought of integrating here a lamp based on phosphorescent pieces on the table that separates the two protagonists, just to stick to the scene of the film. Anecdotal, but that's always taken.

LEGO Star Wars 75205 Mos Eisley Cantina

We can't really talk about playability here: one door that opens, two armchairs that tilt via the built-in mechanism, children or fans of today need a little more ... more impress by the different clips that connect the three modules together. This mini-set is not "modular" as it is and the Cantina cannot be "deploys"not as much as LEGO would suggest in the official product description.

Regarding the characters provided, and if we consider that this set is ultimately just a pretext to sell us minifigs, LEGO offers a rather consistent assortment.

LEGO Star Wars 75205 Mos Eisley Cantina

The arrival of Wuher in the LEGO catalog is good news. The character is beloved by fans and it was time for LEGO to pay tribute to him. The character's outfit is simple, but true to the costume from the movie. Regarding the face, LEGO gives us an acceptable and "softened" adaptation of the features of British actor Ted Burnett, including scars.

Sandtroopers fans are entitled to the version already seen in the set 75052 Mos Eisley Winery raised here to the rank of sergeant with slightly different back equipment. Under the helmet, the Clone head has already been seen and reviewed in many boxes of the LEGO Star Wars range.

Greedo appears here in a new version with a less coarse pad printing than that of the minifigure from the 2014 set. Still no pad printing on the arms to more faithfully reproduce the costume of the film. Never mind.
Finally, the Han Solo minifigure delivered in this box is not new, it was already available in the set. 75159 Death Star released in 2016.

New collectors will be happy with this overpriced mini-version of Mos Eisley's Cantina which allows them to get a new machine and four minifigs in the process, but regulars in the LEGO Star Wars range will probably be hungry for more.

The collector that I am obviously cannot ignore the arrival of Wuher in a minifig version, but the acquisition of this box will wait for a significant reduction in its price at one dealer or another.

LEGO Marvel 76100 Royal Talon Fighter Attack

Today we are interested in the LEGO Marvel set 76100 Royal Talon Fighter Attack with its 358 parts, its four minifigs and its almost reasonable retail price of 34.99 €.

First observation: I am happy to see that LEGO offers us a product derived from a film whose content makes many appearances on the screen. I emphasize this because it is not always the case ...

Even if the result is ultimately very honest, we can think that LEGO once again had access to a few very preliminary visuals of the ship to imagine the set. Even if we know straight away that it is the Royal Talon, the LEGO version is a little too tight and compact. But it holds well in hand and the youngest will be able to really have fun flying this ship. This was probably the goal that LEGO wanted.

Collectors will have to be content with this version, it will certainly be the only one that LEGO will market, but it can still be enthroned alongside a Quinjet or a Milano without disfiguring your shelf.

The cockpit is quite spacious, and there are obviously no levers. Those who have seen the film will understand that this is not an oversight or a shortcut on LEGO's part. The canopy is dressed with a sticker that adds the essential finishes, we will be satisfied. Long stickers also dress the sides of the ship. Be careful with the installation of these stickers ...

LEGO Marvel 76100 Royal Talon Fighter Attack

The designer chose fins in Pearl Dark Gray already seen in some Ninjago sets to reproduce the rear perimeter of the ship. Why not, the rendering is very correct and these fins are firmly attached to the cabin. They don't move and that's a good thing both for the overall aesthetics and for the handling of the ship. There is nothing more annoying than having to regularly realign this type of element ...

LEGO Marvel 76100 Royal Talon Fighter Attack

Under the ship, it's much more sketchy and not very faithful to the film version. The two reactors are positioned differently and they boil down to a few transparent parts. It's not a big deal, no one will exhibit this Royal Talon upside down.

The Stud shooters that add a bit of extra playability to this set are concealed enough not to detract from the overall aesthetic of the ship.

A hatch located on the upper part of the Royal Talon gives access to an interior space. Nothing very exciting, just enough to store a few weapons or a minifigure.

Black Panther

LEGO Marvel 76100 Royal Talon Fighter Attack

Regarding the minifigs, the set allows you to obtain four characters: Black Panther, Nakia, Killmonger and Ulysse Klaue.

A note: It's a paradox, Black Panther is a film where the costumes are really amazing and original, but not all minifigs based on the film have been lucky enough to be so successful. Three of the four minifigs in this box have neutral legs without any pad printing.

76100 royal talon fighter hero attacks 2

76100 Royal Talon Fighter Attack Heroes Back 2

The Black Panther minifigure is quite successful, too bad for the eyes that I find a little too big under the mask. The costume is sober but faithful to the hero's outfit seen in the film. A few lines on the legs and it was perfect.

Despite having a torso very much like the costume from the film, Nakia also lacks a few significant attributes: epaulets, armbands, and something that looks like a tunic.

The legs could also have been pad printed with different shades of brown, just to match the character outfit. A good point for the heroine haircut, a new piece that offers many possibilities for anyone looking to create original minifigs.

Nakia has her two Ring Blades ou Chakrams here embodied by two gray rings. It is basic but sufficient. Anyway, the MOCeurs will quickly find an alternative use to these two rings, a third copy of which is also delivered by LEGO in this box ...

Killmonger's minifigure is also successful. The mask is faithful to the model in the film and it is made of soft plastic, which will prevent it from being destroyed when you step on it. The torso and legs conform to the character's outfit on screen. Too bad for the really neutral face already seen on the Shocker minifigure of the set 76083 Beware the Vulture and for the absence of a beard. LEGO might have been able to provide some extra hair, especially since the mask only makes a relatively short onscreen appearance ...

Ulysse Klaue will be especially valuable for having the chance to add a new version of Andy Serkis (with his real face ...) to our collections. We can discuss the character's left hand and the weapon provided by LEGO, but overall the minifig is faithful to the outfit of the actor in the film and LEGO reproduces the face of Andy Serkis rather well.

76100 royal Talon fighter attack villains 1

76100 royal Talon fighter attack villains back 1

In summary, this 76100 Royal Talon Fighter Attack set sold € 34.99 on Shop @ Home has its faults but it is also a box which offers a rather successful machine and four characters relatively faithful to their versions on the big screen. There is something for everyone: the youngest will be able to play with this solid and compact ship and collectors will get a very correct reproduction of the Royal Talon Fighter. I say yes.
