Alfred The Butler (bat014) - Photo of the minifigure - Copyright Brickset

I just finished putting together the few minifigs I was missing to complete my LEGO Batman series from 2006 to 2008, I'm currently focused on the Spiderman range. The minifigs only because the sets are unaffordable and don't really interest me. In this regard, remember to use Brickset and its Minifig Browser to keep the list of minifigs that you have, you probably already do it for your sets and it is very practical.

For the Star Wars range, I collect sets because I consider vehicles, places and important events: They are an integral part of the saga. And then Star Wars, that cannot be discussed ....
Regarding Batman, apart from the Batmobile and the Tumbler, mythical machines of this universe, I do not need or want to collect bat-widgets, bat-things or improbable bat-stuff.

But when the set 6860 The Batcave has been presented in detail at New York Comic-Con 2011, the awful news has fallen: There will be no new minifigure ofAlfred Pennyworth ou Alfred the Butler, the faithful butler of Bruce Wayne and who, notably (but not only) in the saga shot by Christopher Nolan for cinema (Batman Begins & Batman the dark knight), plays a key role with its master.

Alfred The Bulter (bat014) on Bricklink

The minifigure released in 2006 in the set 7783 The Batcave: The Penguin and Mr. Freeze's Invasion therefore remains the one and only plastic representation of this character to date, and its average price for a new minifig increased significantly between May 2011 and October 2011 (Average calculated by Bricklink on the basis of sales made for a new version of this minifigure, provided as an indication).
However, the variation is currently limited, the prices charged have long been very high on these minifigs from the Batman range.

I wouldn't go into the details of the sums involved, that's not the point and you just have to go to bricklink ou eBay to see the price inflation for these minifigs. I just intend to stress the need for a collector of minifigs whose range has been stopped and then renewed to obtain without delay the characters that he considers essential to his collection.

And in this specific case, with the arrival of the range Lego superheroes, the prices of the minifigs of the ranges Batman (2006 to 2008) et Spiderman (2003/2004) will flare up. Why ?

For a simple reason: Supply and demand. Children are fond of super heroes (adults often too), and from 2012 many will want to collect the minifigs of the new LEGO DC & Marvel range.
The affected products will be released in volume and it will be easy to procure these complete sets or minifigs at retail. But the moment will inevitably come when this range will run out of steam or stop.
Then will begin the way of the cross for all those collectors who will sooner or later want to complete their collection with products from the same range but older. If you think about this for a few seconds, you will realize that we have all done it, except those who for example were already in the ranks for Star Wars products in 1999 and who have still been collecting them for over 10 years. They are rare.

10179 Millennium Falcon UCS on eBay

Some theories support the idea that a reboot, or remake of a range lowers the price of products that are re-released on the parallel market.
This is partly true. Partly only, because it only concerns a few specific products. If LEGO ever came out with a Millennium Falcon UCS, the price of the set 10179, overvalued today, would actually drop. But it would remain in any case much more expensive on the parallel market than when it was still marketed by LEGO at the price of 549 € because it would still be two different sets and collectors are compulsive .... They want all versions ....

If you have a little money to spend, start with the characters that are unlikely to be reissued (at least among those announced so far) or with those that you think are essential because their reissue concerns another version of the character itself. same, like Robin (Red Robin) or Two Face (comic version) for example. For the rest, take your time, compare the prices and the state of freshness of the minifigure.

15/08/2011 - 22:33 Rumors

The rumor is growing: We should have a new Batmobile in 2012.

There is indeed a high probability that LEGO will offer us a new set containing this iconic vehicle from the Batman universe. Identifiable by everyone, young and old, the Batmobile will ensure the commercial success of the set in which it will be found.

The question that remains unanswered is: Which Batmobile? A model faithful to the comics or a version of the Tumbler seen in the last films directed by Christopher Nolan with Christian Bale as Batman. The release in 2012 of the last part of the trilogy could encourage to consider a Tumbler.

Personally I lean for a version closer to that of the set 7784 The Batmobile: Ultimate Collectors' Edition released in 2006, as a kind of homecoming, eagerly awaited by fans and late collectors.

In the Batman range (2006-2008), there is also a Batmobile in the set system 7781 The Batmobile: Two-Face's Escape also released in 2006, and a version of the Tumbler in the set system 7888 The Tumbler: Joker's Ice Cream Surprise released in 2008.

In the chapter of the most active rumors of the moment, we also speak of a Batwing of which we had already been entitled to a version in 2006 with the set system 7782 The Batwing: The Joker's Aerial AssaultOf course, and I cannot repeat it enough, these are rumors without a confirmed credible source.

Only the release of a few preliminary photos of upcoming sets or a cleverly orchestrated LEGO blunder will confirm or deny these rumors.

Younger people may not know that LEGO has already marketed a range based on the Batman / DC Comics license in the past.

In 2006, 7 sets of the Batman range were marketed, in 2007 3 sets and in 2008 4 sets.
Magnets and key chains were also marketed from 2006 to 2008.

In total there are 25 different minifigs that can be found in these sets and many emblematic characters from the DC Comics universe are represented: Batman itself in four different versions, Robin in two versions, Bane, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, killer croc, Nightwing, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, The Joker, The Penguin, The riddler et Two face.

To this are added the minifigs ofAlfred, Bruce Wayne and some sidekicks of the villains or guardians of the Arkham Asylum. In 2008, the LEGO Batman video game produced by TT Games was released and was a huge hit with young audiences.
Within the game, many characters appear as Ra's al-Ghul ou clayface. These characters have never been edited in minfigs despite their presence in the video game.

batman 7888 the tumbler jokers ice cream surprise

The range of sets released between 2006 and 2008 gave pride of place, and we sometimes wonder why, to many vehicles from films, comics, or video games.

You can find almost everything that flies, floats or rolls in these sets: Batmobile, Bat-Tank, Batboat, Batcopter, etc ..... On the occasion of the release of the film The Dark Knight in 2008, LEGO offers even a set with the Tumbler (7888 The Tumbler: Joker's Ice Cream Surprise).

This range has its faults: many machines are fanciful and come from peripheral comics or cartoons and one gets the impression that LEGO, convinced that it takes machines to better sell its sets, has scraped the bottom of the drawer to offer something other than a few minifigs.7784

One of the emblematic sets of this range will remain the set 7784 The Batmobile: Ultimate Collectors' Edition released in 2006 with its 1045 pieces.

AFOLs often consider that this range has not really worked. The mix of different Batman universes (comics, films, cartoons) is undoubtedly for something.

Even in 2008, when the movie The Dark Knight was released, LEGO found a way to market sets that had nothing to do with the movie's universe. Comic book fans are often universe purists. origin or the best interpretations made of it in the cinema for example.

In 2012, LEGO will have an interest in offering sets respecting the universes and characters concerned to ensure the loyalty of AFOLs fans of superheroes.

On the children's side, we suspect that this new DC / Marvel license will work, especially thanks to the many superhero films coming out this year and next year.

To catch up and get these sets of the Batman 2006/2007/2008 rangeyou will need to turn to eBay or bricklink. Be careful, the prices of certain sets sometimes reach peaks.

After the excitement, it's time to come to your senses and try to see things more clearly in this strategic business alliance between LEGO, Warner Bros (DC Universe) and Disney (Marvel).

So I give you my thoughts: What can we expect from these licenses for sets, minifigs or derivative products?

It is obvious that the current period is favorable for products derived from these two licenses: Warner Bros. surfs on the success of the saga Batman the dark knight with Christian Bale.

The first two films, Batman Begins et The Dark Knight have been successful. The third part of the saga,  The Dark Knight Rises, still directed by Christopher Nolan is already announced for July 2012 and it should close a coherent cycle.

Zack Snyder is in charge of the next one Superman: The Man of Steel, with Henry Cavill in the title role and two heavyweights in the cast: Kevin Costner and Russel Crowe. Another strong media support for the commercial launch of the Super Heroes range.

There is little doubt that a LEGO Batman video game featuring the events of the Nolan / Bale trilogy will be released. A clue, which might not be one, TT Games, official developer of LEGO video game licenses, is currently recruiting hard.

Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern could also appear in this game, which leads me to believe that Warner will push his franchise. Justice League (Justice League), already available in cartoons, video games (Justice League Heroes) on PSP, XBOX and Nintendo DS, etc ....

Video games make it possible to gain the loyalty of a young audience who will not necessarily have access to films because of parental censorship due to the violence of certain scenes. (The Dark Knight is a good example).

fake game

Regarding the Marvel license, it is clear that the Avengers will be at the center of the LEGO strategy.

Here too, I think a video game will be offered in the wake of the film's release. The Avengers scheduled for April 2012 bringing together Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Hulk, Nick Fury, Hawkeye .... which will be directed by Joss Whedon and which already promises to be the Blockbuster of next year.

Until then, Captain America: First Avenger will have already experienced commercial exploitation since August 2011. Iron Man 3, it is not expected until 2013, and it should be part of LEGO's strategy to maintain customer interest in the Marvel license.

Green Lantern scheduled for 2011 with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, Thor released this year with Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman and X-Men: First Class with James McAvoy round out this media coverage.

In addition to video games, the question arises about the possible sets that LEGO could offer. Super Heroes are often self-sufficient.

Few iconic vehicles (A motorcycle for Captain America or the new batmobile?), Few places known and identified by the fans (Tony Starck's garage / lab?), It will be difficult to put parts around the minifigs. However, we already know that a set "DC Universe Batcave"is planned and will also be offered as an endowment to the competition I was talking about here.

Tumbler 01

LEGO could offer the minifigs alone in packs of 3, 5 or more as was the case at the start of the Star Wars range (with sets 3340, 3341, 3342 and 3343 in 2000)?

I don't really believe it, although this possibility should not be ruled out. In my opinion, playsets with good guys and bad guys will be there, probably based on scenes seen in the movies.

On the other hand, I think that we will undoubtedly be entitled to packs of magnets and other key chains, which I do not particularly appreciate: They relegate the minifig to the rank of simple decoration. (Image of a BaronSat MOC)

Some people talk about the possibility of selling these minifigs in bags, as is the case for the series of collectible minifigs.

I don't believe it either. LEGO will want to make the most of these licenses which are excessively expensive in royalties and will sell part around these coveted minifigs, already evidenced exorbitant prices reached on eBay by the two exclusive Comic Con minifigs, Batman and Green Lantern ....
