Review: LEGO 40566 Ray The Castaway

We are talking today quickly about the content of the LEGO set 40566 Ray The Castaway, a small promotional product that will be offered from €120 of purchase without range restriction on the official online store and in LEGO Stores from October 1, 2022.

Relatively good news for all those who collect products stamped with the LEGO Ideas logo but who are tired of having to regularly pay their sets at full price to get these small promotional sets: this set is not "officially" identified as a member of the range, at least not on the box. However, this was the case for the other products also resulting from a competition organized on the LEGO Ideas platform and already offered by LEGO with the presence of the logo on the packaging: 40335 Space Rocket Ride (2019) 40448 Vintage Car (2020) 40487 Sailboat Adventure (2022) et 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures (2022)

The LEGO revisited version of the winning creation of the competition in question remains globally very faithful to the initial construction and there is therefore nothing to feel cheated after the few modifications made by the manufacturer. The pair of legs that served as a sail for the raft has disappeared, a parrot replaces the seagull but everything respects the original idea and takes up the good ideas present in the reference creation.

The official product is not only a pretty scene with Ray the shipwrecked vacationer, but it is also a pack rather rich in various and varied elements which will allow the most creative to expand their dioramas a little. The vegetation there is relatively abundant, we have a few blue and beige plaques, a chest, a bottle, two fish, a crab, a parrot in two colors, two snakes, a buoy and enough to build a small hut. That's pretty good for a small promotional set of 239 pieces.

Castaway minifig reuses torso released in 2020 in LEGO Ideas set 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay, Flash's legs injected in two colors and a very common head that simulates the arrival of Ray with his growing beard before adding the accessory provided that testifies to long months spent on this desert island.

In short, this little box is successful, it's plush and detailed, the assembly is rather fun, the inventory is interesting and the set can easily decorate the corner of a shelf. From there to spend 120 € in products sold at their public prices so some have undergone a frank increase at the start of the school year, it will be up to everyone to see if this small set with obvious qualities is worth the effort.
