Review : LEGO Speed ​​Champions 76899 Lamborghini Urus ST-X & Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO

Today we take a quick look at the LEGO Speed ​​Champions set 76899 Lamborghini Urus ST-X & Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO (663 pieces - 64.99 €), a box to the glory of the Italian brand which allows us to obtain two very different vehicles.

I'm not going to give you the usual verse on the offset steering wheel and the countless stickers that dress the two vehicles, it's like the previous sets. As a bonus, the green of the stickers of the Urus ST-X SUV is not the same as that of the body parts, we are starting to get used to these often subtle but disappointing color differences.

The set has the advantage of offering two very different constructions in terms of form and substance: The Huracán and the SUV have in common only the brand that makes them. Overall, the two LEGO versions are relatively faithful to the reference models and they also benefit from the move to 8 studs wide. The front of the Huracán is particularly successful with rather convincing angles and imitation of the hood openings. The central fin is integrated with an almost elegant solution that knows how to be discreet when all the parts are in place.

On closer inspection, there are obviously some approximations: the banner of sponsor Roger Dubuis on the pad-printed windshield should have been straight to really stick to the reference model. We also regret the aesthetic inconsistency between the rare golden pieces and the impressions of the stickers which theoretically should be of the same shade.

By comparing the two visuals above, we see as usual that the passage to 8 studs only partially allows better reproduction of the curves of vehicles with a very "organic" design. It's much better than some previous models in the LEGO Speed ​​Champions range although it's not always perfect.

This Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO in version 2019 uses the new chassis and the new axles already seen on other vehicles in the 2020 range. We will retain the few interesting sub-assemblies at the nose and (fixed) doors of the car and as usual the slew of Wedges with 45 ° cut-outs which come to the aid of the designer in the most complicated places to reproduce on the body.

The Lamborghini Urus ST-X in a LEGO version, for its part, offers a slightly different building experience than the other vehicles in the range. The chassis here is made up of plates to be assembled with a raised rear axle that really gives the Italian brand's competition SUV allure.

The windshield strip is like the other vehicle in this box aligned with the curve of the room and that's a shame. I would have preferred a straight strip aligned on the junction with the roof of the vehicle. The front and rear of the SUV are convincing with techniques that allow to stick to the design of the reference model. No stickers for the headlights, certainly symbolic at the front with a single small black piece, but it was successful.

It is on the sides of the SUV that it spoils a little with a stall embodied by an overlay of parts and stickers to reproduce half of the rear windows. We find ourselves on arrival with a transparent half-glass and a black sticker which gives the curve of the surface concerned. It's ridiculously ugly. As a bonus, the stickers are deliberately designed with a large margin compared to the size of the room on which they take place, either we choose to center them perfectly and there remains an unattractive border, or to shift them so as not to lose the continuity of pattern or color. It's up to you.

The rims have their small effect on the wheels which clearly protrude from the bodywork. However, this is not the case on the reference model, but the designer will have chosen to reinforce the sporting side of the vehicle here. Why not.

We can discuss the choice of color for the body of the LEGO version, but I quite like this lime green which gives the SUV some pizzazz. Everything is not perfect on this second model, but it really makes me want to see LEGO decline other SUVs in this Speed ​​Champions range, even if they are not always models used in competition with why not a Porsche Cayenne, an Audi Q7 or a BMW X6.

In this box, LEGO provides us with two pilots obviously dressed in a jumpsuit in the colors of the brand of this derivative product all in the glory of Lamborghini. Good news, there is a female pilot in this set. It is also necessary to build a starting gantry which allows to change the color of the lights by sliding the central element of the construction. I would gladly exchange this accessory without much interest for 5 or 10 euros less on the public price of the set. Anyone can DIY a gantry crane from their loose parts and I expect from the LEGO Speed ​​Champions range only detailed vehicles sold at a fair price.

In short, this set has its faults but it also offers two interesting models to assemble and display. The pleasure of assembling exceptional vehicles in the LEGO version is sometimes a little spoiled by the laborious steps of installing the stickers, but we do with it.

64.99 €, it is however a bit expensive for two vehicles, two minifigs and a gantry, so we will wait until the price of this box drops significantly at Amazon and others before cracking.
