75292 The Razor Crest

Today we are very quickly interested in the LEGO Star Wars set 75292 The Razor Crest (1023 pieces - 139.99 €), a box based on the first season of the series The Mandalorian broadcast in November 2019 on the Disney + platform and whose pre-orders had been launched at the beginning of 2020. In the meantime, the set has changed its name to become the reference 75292 The Mandalorian Bounty Hunter Transport, a priori for questions of rights on the appellation "Razor crest".

The first season of the series was only available last March in Europe, but almost everyone had already been able to watch the eight episodes concerned long before that date. If the initial announcement of the set had had its effect, the wait for its effective availability scheduled for September 2020 has no doubt allowed some fans to realize that we can very well live without this box. This is my case, and if I was at the time rushing to spend the 140 € requested by LEGO to pre-order Baby Yoda and everything that comes with it, it is with a little less enthusiasm that I unpacked the package received a few months later.

However, it would be unfair to summarize this box in the presence of the Baby Yoda figurine by obscuring everything that goes around and the set deserves better than to be considered as a luxury case for a small figurine that is not elsewhere not technically very successful. The Razor crest seen on screen is reproduced here with conviction by the designers of the product, mixing a relatively faithful aesthetic, interesting features and some references to the various scenes that take place inside the Mandalorian ship.

This 1000-piece ship is not an ultra-detailed exhibition mockup, however, it is only an expensive toy, and nothing compares this version to the many MOCs of several thousand pieces that have been circulating on the internet for many months.

The machine has been designed to be handled and its internal structure based on Technic beams gives it foolproof strength. The various panels of the ship's cabin clip onto this internal frame and even if the fit of some of them is a little rough with spaces a little too present at certain angles, it works.

The entire lower area of the Razor crest is accessible and the volume of internal space available is surprising, almost too large compared to what it is possible to do with the accessories supplied which boil down to a few weapons, two carbonite blocks and the three missiles that are can store in a dedicated space. The various rather cramped spaces seen on the screen are mainly symbolized here by the bunk placed under the cockpit, the rest being a little empty. The two carbonite blocks can be stored vertically in the locations provided, it is compliant.

Too bad LEGO did not see fit to add at least one internal ladder, even if it did not overlook anything, many scenes taking place around this connection between the storage spaces and the cockpit. The designers have however exploited all imaginable storage possibilities with in particular a clip to hang the hero's weapon under the rear screen of the cockpit.

The canopy of the cockpit is pad printed, LEGO did not consider it reasonable to impose stickers on us for this curved element which can easily be removed and put back in place thanks to a handle and two internal clips. So much the better, the overall aesthetic of the ship and its ability to resist light and dust from the corner of a shelf is only enhanced.

There are a few stickers to stick in this box to give the cabin a little patina, create some effects on the two reactors, decorate the inside of the hero's berth and dress the two blocks with carbonite. These would undoubtedly have deserved better, but we will do with these standard parts intended to slip into the internal locations.

There is no escaping the two barrels at the back of the reactors, parts that I still have great difficulty in finding relevant to this type of construction. Their use may once again seem ingenious to some, I just see the desire to make us believe that we can do anything with LEGO with a little imagination, even if it means creating an anachronism too offbeat to convince me.

The ship is well equipped with skids, as on the version seen on the screen, but the two elements placed at the back are not deported outwards and are content to discreetly support the machine which loses a little of its presence when the construction is placed on the ground. TheEscape Pod integrated in the upper area of the cabin adds a little playability to the product, it is always taken even if the removal of this element leaves a gaping hole.

Two Spring-Shooters are integrated into the cabin and it is nicely done. They know how to be discreet and do not disfigure the vessel, so they do not affect its potential for exposure. We will also remember the techniques used for the design of the internal structure of the two reactors which snap onto the body of the vessel.

As for the endowment in minifigs, the minifig of the Mandalorian delivered in this box is identical to that of the set 75254 AT-ST Raider (540 pieces - 59.99 €) and LEGO therefore did not take the opportunity to provide us with the head of Pedro Pascal. The character's face is however well revealed during the first season but here we have to be satisfied with the usual black head.

The minifig of the Scout Trooper is not more new than that of the hero, it was already in the set 75238 Action Battle Endor Assault (193 pieces - € 29.99) marketed in 2019.

Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) is correct even if the minifigure looks very generic in the end with her "raspberry" hair and neutral legs on which LEGO could have made the effort to pad a piece of tunic so that the pattern does not stop not abruptly down the torso. The result is a little disappointing, but it will have to be done with. The IG-11 assassin droid is an assembly of parts already seen at LEGO topped with a pad printed part very faithful to the version of the character seen on the screen.

Finally, here we get the long-awaited version of Baby Yoda, in the form of a minifigure using the usual body of LEGO babies topped with a molded head in flexible plastic. It was hard to do better to maintain a semblance of scale between the creature and the other characters, but the whole thing is marred a bit by the difference in color between the head and the hands.

The official visuals were once again very optimistic, if not misleading, with perfectly matched colors. Another technical detail: the belly pattern takes up more space on the reference visual and loses a bit in volume on the final version. As usual, we will be satisfied with what LEGO wants to offer us, but the minifigure loses a little of its splendor due to these technical approximations.

In short, this set is therefore in my opinion a bit like the first season of the series: All is not perfect, it unleashed passions especially thanks to the presence of Baby Yoda, but the attraction of the novelty and the new prevails despite everything on the few imperfections of the product. The ship is broadly in line with what one would expect from a past adaptation to the LEGO mill, pending a hypothetical version Ultimate Collector Series of the machine with a more furnished interior which would take up the details seen in many scenes ...

Fans of the LEGO Star Wars range, who have been collecting sets for several years, know that a little freshness and something new allows you to get out of the usual routine of remakes and other reissues. For that alone, this box which features a ship already more emblematic of the Star Wars universe than many other products sold at LEGO therefore deserves in my opinion to join our collections.

Note: The set presented here, supplied by LEGO, is as usual in play. Deadline fixed at September 23, 2020 next at 23pm.

Update : The winner was drawn and was notified by email, his nickname is indicated below. Without a response from him to my request for contact details within 5 days, a new winner will be drawn.
