Today we quickly tour the LEGO DC Comics set 76161 1989 Bat Wing (2363 pieces - 199.99 €), a large box which will join the Batmobile of the set from October 21 76139 1989 Batmobile (3306 pieces - 249.99 €) in the collection of products that pay homage to the 1989 film directed by Tim Burton.

The Batwing is one of the many chestnut trees in the LEGO DC Comics range and the manufacturer has already given us several more or less successful and detailed interpretations of the craft. However, this is the first time that we have had such a complex and imposing model of the Batwing and even if this new version is more or less inspired by the film of 1989, I think that it is sufficiently representative of the idea that we made a Batwing so that it would please all fans of the universe of the vigilante of Gotham City.

The designer has also taken some liberties in terms of the proportions of the machine which is much more collected in the film. The avowed objective here was to stick to the scale of the Batmobile of the set 76139 1989 Batmobile which gives us a much longer cockpit than on the version used on the screen. We won't complain, the Batwing of the film really has a side Chibi which we will gladly do without.

As much to report it immediately, I took a little less pleasure to assemble this Batwing than during the assembly of the Batmobile. Here, we stack plates that cover the imposing internal structure based on frames Technic, we build some subsets in SNOT (Studs Not On Top) for the growths whose shape is not defined by the central frame, identical elements are reproduced with a mirror effect essential to obtain the wings and there is hardly anything but the cockpit and the various elements that offer a little variety. But the end justifies the means and the end result is quite impressive with a machine of a respectable scale: 58 cm wide, 52 cm long.

We note that the interior of this Batwing is compatible with that of the Batmobile of the set 76139 1989 Batmobile, there is an assortment of pieces in the same colors until the presence of the frame Technic in Dark Azure which indicates the position of the hole in which the presentation support is inserted. Nice wink.

The support provided allows the Batwing to be exposed from two different angles: the machine can point its nose up or down depending on the height of the shelf on which you will install it, to make the most of the construction in all configurations. It is well seen, this "modularity" makes it possible to vary the settings in scene and does not limit the possibilities of exposure.

During the official product announcement, LEGO indicated that this Batwing can be hung on a wall via the integrated fixing, and as we could imagine the manufacturer is reusing here the new part already supplied with the frames of the LEGO Art range. . However, you will have to be very careful if you want to press the Batwing against the living room wall, the machine weighs nearly 2.5 kg.

A simple nail will probably not suffice and it is important to note that the fastener is not placed flush with the bottom surface of the construction. It will therefore be necessary to provide a plug and a screw long enough to reach the support, or first remove the decorative elements placed under the Batwing to bring the fixing closer to the wall.

As we suspected from the official announcement of the product, the leading edge of the wings has a somewhat rough finish. These two sub-assemblies are only attached to the main structure via a few tenons in the center, a clip at the back, a somewhat hazardous interlocking at the front and ... two rubber bands. The curve is not perfect, there are still some notches all along the edge of the wing and I find it all a bit messy.

The designer did slip two yellow pad-printed elements of the usual logo into each of the sub-assemblies, but this detail that disappears when the fender edges are installed is not enough to convince me. On a personal note, I always struggle with high-end models that use simple rubber bands for a finishing detail or precise functionality, knowing that LEGO doesn't even provide replacements.

The apparent tenons / smooth surfaces ratio seems to me to be well studied on the whole model and I think that the wings really gain relief. A completely smooth surface would in any case only have amplified the appearance of the usual defects of this type of quasi-monochrome construction such as scratches, injection points, fingerprints or dust.

The two Gatling guns placed on the sides of the cockpit are gray and are not retractable like on the machine of the film. I would have preferred them in black, but I readily understand those who will consider that this color brings a little contrast to the surface of the model.

Everything is not perfect in this box, starting with a recurring problem at LEGO which here takes on a whole new dimension: the number of striped black parts is far too large not to mention it, especially in a product which is stamped 18 + and which is sold for 200 €. Throughout the logistical phase, the parts move around in half-empty bags, themselves stored in a box that is too large and in the end disappointment is in order. I am not talking about the injection points visible on certain parts but rather about scratches caused by the elements rubbing together in the different bags.

The cockpit canopy did not escape the carnage with large scratches on some elements. It is made up of smoked pieces packed in a flexible bag even thinner than the other bags in the set which can be moved freely in the packaging. Seen from a distance, this Batwing really looks great, but when you approach you immediately notice these many scratches on the parts. If, like me, these scratches are a problem for you, do not hesitate to make an inventory of the parts concerned and to request their replacement from customer service. If no one ever says anything, LEGO has no reason to react.

It is not because this product is stamped 18 + that LEGO refrains from imposing on us the usual stickers with four very small stickers that decorate the cockpit. Those who are used to the Speed Champions range know that these tiny stickers are annoying and will be able to use all their know-how here. We find the joker on the main screen of the cockpit and the balloons on one of the side screens, but the model does not include the clamp used by Batman to cut the cable and keep the balloons filled with Smylex gas away.

While there are some who are still wondering, this Batwing is obviously not on the minifig scale. But it is not a toy for children anyway and this model is only intended to be exhibited. The three supplied minifigs are presented on a roof cornice identical to that of the set 76139 1989 Batmobile, it's up to you to make only one with the two copies, removing a space in passing since the Batman figurine is identical in both sets.

The process is a bit lazy, LEGO could have made the effort to offer us a variant of the bat suit worn by Michael Keaton with for example a different drape effect for the cape.

The other two minifigs provided are new and exclusive. That of the Joker in his mime outfit is a little disappointing "in real life" and the official visuals are once again a little too optimistic. The white pad printed on the character's torso does not match the color of the head and legs and the black pad printed on the legs is not as deep as that of the torso.

This patchwork of hues is not in the best taste, nor is the piece of fabric used to make the character's jacket appear to extend down the legs. If Batman takes advantage of a molded cape, the Joker could also have been entitled to a more consistent piece.

LEGO DC Comics 76161 1989 Bat Wing

The minifig of Lawrence, the Joker's henchman that we see dancing with his boombox on his shoulder alongside Nicholson in the museum scene, is on the other hand very successful with a torso and a face really faithful to the version seen on screen. LEGO could have cracked a black version of the ghetto blaster to better stick to the scene of the film, the reuse of the generic element already seen in several sets is here also a little lazy.

To conclude and by specifying in passing that I am a big fan of the 1989 film, I think this Batwing has everything to please, as long as we escape the inevitable multiple scratches which spoil the final rendering. It will be necessary to insist with LEGO to obtain parts without too many defects but I think that the game will be worth the candle.

The assembly phase is not as entertaining as that of the Batmobile, but it is also the subject which imposes techniques that are sometimes uninspired or repetitive. As I said at the beginning of this article, the end justifies the means and this model seems very successful to me even if it takes some liberties with the reference machine to be able to be perfectly matched to the Batmobile. I will therefore be one of those who will spend € 200 without hesitation at LEGO from October 21.

Note: The set presented here, supplied by LEGO, is as usual in play. Deadline fixed at 20th October, 2020 next at 23pm.

Update : The winner was drawn and was notified by email, his nickname is indicated below. Without a response from him to my request for contact details within 5 days, a new winner will be drawn.

LEGO DC Comics 76161 1989 Bat Wing

Today is Batman Day, and for the occasion LEGO unveils the DC Comics set 76161 1989 Bat Wing, a new reference directly based on the 1989 Batman film directed by Tim Burton with Michael Keaton in the title role, Jack Nicholson as Joker and Kim Basinger as Vicky Vale.

Last year, LEGO already regaled us with a reproduction of the Batmobile from the movie in the set 76139 1989 Batmobile (3306 pieces - 249.99 €) and this year it is the Batwing of the film's turn to go down in history at LEGO.

In the box, 2363 pieces to assemble a Batwing of 58 x 52 x 11 cm and three minifigs to install on a ledge-shaped display identical to that of set 76139: Batman who is back with his superb molded plastic cape, the Joker in his mime outfit and Lawrence, the Joker's henchman played by George Lane Cooper with his boombox and seen dancing with Nicholson on party man of Prince in the museum scene.

We will talk about this set, which will be available at the public price of 199.99 € / 209.00 CHF as a VIP preview from October 21, on the occasion of a "Quickly Tested"but be aware that the machine can be hung on the wall via a support provided and that it contains some easter eggs relating to the film. As you can imagine, I will approach the matter with enthusiasm, I hope not to be disappointed by the possible too great fragility of the construction.
