We continue to take a closer look at the different references marketed since June 1 in the LEGO Speed Champions range and today we are quickly interested in the set. 76901 Toyota GR Supra, a box of 299 pieces sold for 19.99 € which in principle allows us to assemble a reproduction of the Toyota GR Supra.
We are not going to lie to each other, we are once again reaching the limits of the exercise aimed at converting a vehicle into a LEGO version with full curves. For those wondering what a Toyota GR Supra really looks like, I've put a visual in the gallery below for you.
The assembly of the vehicle is once again very entertaining, we feel that the designer did his best with what he had in his drawers to provide a short but fun experience. The front bumper is very elaborate and the rear of the vehicle is arguably the most successful part.
As often, the stickers then come to the rescue of those who take the risk of treating the subject and try to convince us that the pieces used are not square. It is a bit of a failure with an artificially extended or distorted glazing thanks to stickers whose color does not match the "real" windows used on the model.
As the stickers are intentionally undersized in relation to the surfaces on which they are placed, the effect of extending the glazing appears even more sloppy. The windshield used here almost does the job, although the sides of the element used are too flat to really convince.
The stickers to stick on the vehicle are as for the 1968 Corvette from the set 76903 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R Race Car and 1968 Chevrolet Corvette on transparent background. The result is a little less disappointing on this vehicle, the yellow parts on which these stickers are glued greatly limiting the visibility of the traces of white glue.
The front headlights are broken down into stickers that are spread over three staircase elements. The result is really disappointing with the optics glazing interspersed with yellow bands. We will compensate for the disappointment as we can by noting that the Tile 1x1 with the Gazoo Racing logo placed on the back is pad printed and is even supplied in two copies in the box.
The pilot's minifigure has a very nice torso with a big Toyota logo on the back, a pity that the seams of the suit do not extend to the legs. The hair provided in addition to the helmet does not go under the roof of the vehicle, too bad for those who would like to expose the type in "Sunday ride at the wheel of my racing car" mode.
If you admit that the LEGO Speed Champions line is a sometimes perilous exercise in style involving doing the best you can with what you have on hand in the Billund offices, this set may find its audience among the most forgiving of fans. .
Otherwise, LEGO should really raise the level a little by investing in new elements more suitable for some of these models, especially in the hoods and windshields. This Toyota Supra GR in the LEGO version does not have much of the reference model except the logos, the color and a few details which struggle to compensate for the fact that the line of the vehicle is not very faithful. Without the stickers and the brand logo on the box, I'm not sure many fans will be able to recognize the vehicle at first glance.
Note: The set presented here, provided by LEGO, is as usual involved. Deadline fixed at 17th June 2021 next at 23pm. For newcomers, know that you just need to post a comment to participate in the draw.
Update : The winner was drawn and was notified by email, his nickname is indicated below. Without a response from him to my request for contact details within 5 days, a new winner will be drawn.
